In this lesson I go into depth in regards to chord substitution. This is only scratching the surface in regards to this topic. I cover the most common substitution that I am aware of and explain the thought process behind it. Hope this helps!

Brandon this 'chord substitution' knowledge is something that I have lacked understanding all my playing time. Thank you kindly. Now I have to sit and work it out as you explained, and perhaps complete my rhythm guitar theory understanding.

The only diatonic dominant 7th chord in a major key is the V7. In the key of "C", that would be G7: G, B, D, F. Another reason why the V chord wants to move to the I chord is that the V7 chord contains the "tritone" interval (6 half-tones, or a diminished fifth). In G7, it's the interval between the "B" and the "F" notes. The "tritone" interval is a very unstable interval. As Brandon points out, the "B" wants to move to the tonic "C" in the I chord. Additionally, the tritone's "F" wants to move to the 3rd (the "E") of the I chord. Simultaneous movements to the tonic & the 3rd, the most important notes in a chord. The V7 creates a lot of tension, and a lot of pleasing-to-the-ear resolution when going to the I chord.

I've been watching your videos. I think youre a good teacher. I am trying to get a better handle on theory. I was actually wondering about this very topic. So are substitutions only on the 5 chord then generally? Also how about adding other chords that are out of key. Is there a method to when and where you should do that? Would you consider a video on that? Anyway I appreciated this video cause I didn't know this substitution thing. Thanks man. Peace.
