Confirmation Bias is SO HARD to overcome, but being aware of it gives you a fighting chance.

This is such an important point that undergirds much of our online dysfunction and unproductive arguments. The many filters we see the world through — often not realizing we even possess those filters — was a key insight for me from Brian McLaren’s ‘A New a Kind of Christian’. Whatever else one might think of McLaren, he was spot on in unpacking this core reality.

As someone who has wildly different ideas than when I was younger (I've broken up with a lot of my presuppositions and biases), I think it's also important to realize that in doing so we may become bitter at our old ways of thinking and swing to the opposite end of the spectrum while not giving enough grace. Sometimes there is truth to our biases, so it's important to see them as biases, but also to give them some weight because there may be truth in there. What I've noticed in my life is that I am often bitter at my automatic ways of thinking, and thus dismiss them without giving them good consideration. It's an honest human reaction, especially if you were raised with more of a fundamentalist mindset

The Holy Post talking about how to overcome bias is hilariously hypocritical
