Scientific Problem Solving with Psychedelics

James Fadiman, PhD

James will describe how to best use psychoactive materials for enhanced problem solving, a poorly understood and under-researched area. However, there are established methods that open minds to useful solutions for real problems. He will share his personal experience as part of a group that established the basic guidelines: set and setting, substance and dosage, as well as whatever else was necessary to effectively dissolve barriers to solving hard science problems. Drawing from that research, he will describe which aspects of enhanced cognitive processes lead to successful solutions, followed by reviewing the range of problems attempted, solutions found, and the implications for renewed research. Even informal experimentation can be vastly improved by understanding how best to use these materials to potentiate new thinking about technical obstacles and to initiate conceptual breakthroughs.

Such incredible perspective. This guy is clearly in the 2% that actually 'know' how to use psychedelics.

Unbelievable that research so important would be suppressed and discarded. It's great to see that right now we're finally experiencing a resurge in approved scientific research and curiosity surrounding the potential benefits of entheogen use.

We will be so much better off when we integrate psychedelics into our culture.

Most excellent video. Psychedelic research is necessary...not only can they enhance problems solving, I do believe that we can heal many of the psychological problems in our world by going back to the psychedelic "treatments" ancient and indigenous peoples have used. I think we, as a society, need to understand the power of mind opening science.

Shamans know of "set & setting" as "intention & preparation"; considering both these perspectives gives a better picture of expected effects/results.

So basically what he's saying is that psychedelics can, in the right set and setting, facilitate novel/non-ordinary states of consciousness that have interesting properties or qualities to them, such as high levels of creativity and insight.

Free knowledge-you have a bad trip if you are deeply absorbed in a negative thought about own life.

Has anyone read either "Tihkal" or "Pihkal" by the great Alexander And Ann Shulgen? If you want to LEARN a thing or two about psychedelics read those two books. You will NOT be disappointed. Enjoy.

Wonderful! Very interesting and informative while being very clinical and scientific.

What a exciting time we are living in. A time when we as a society is moving towards being open minded about the therapeutic effects of substances like cannabis, MDMA, LSD and psilocybin. Let the science show the upside and downside of these substances in a honest way instead of bias based on religion or other beliefs. In search of the truth in regards to this. As these substances are studied more and the proven facts come out to the public, then hopefully people will be able to decide for themselves whether or not to use them without fear of prosecution.

Ayahuasca can heal addictions. We can learn so much good from psychedelic!

Outstanding.
I'm not enthused about the criteria for being a test subject, however.
Gettin' pretty tired of only successful bizniss people being considered valid for anything.
Jesus.
When has that ever been real?

I'm also thinking about the Tarahumara Indians in South America who live at the Top of the World and have told us we're ruining the World. The irrigation and traveling path systems they have built must have been inspired in this way. They are amazing. There are many other examples. Such as those bridges that cross deep canyons made out of vines that only get stronger with time.
Holy crap, do we have alot to learn.

I'm sorry if I was being too overcritical, I know that this research will lay the scientific groundwork for many future studies & psychonauts to come, right now I'm just worried that it's progressing too slowly, and soon, it might be too late.

''unethical not to be doing psychedelics'', first time I hear anyone admit that!

I wonder how many of us are.waking up? And having good positive experiences with drugs that have been demonized made illegal obscured and hidden. For example i been involved in this world for 21 years my first of many experiences was mushrooms. It is to my surprise that Albert Hoffman created 4 ACO DMT which i never have had heard of and i just learned about it this week!
Please be respectful with yourself and.each other.
