극단적 행동 부르는 '조울증'...발병 이유 찾았다

A team of Korean researchers has found a key element for bipolar disorder, which is known to cause severe shifts in mood and behavior.
The finding is expected to open new doors for both diagnosis and treatment.
Park Se-young has the details.
Last September, a young man in Korea suffering from bipolar disorder killed his grandmother and injured his father at home.
This is one of the more serious expressions of the mental illness, which is more often associated with manic episodes.
There was once a limit to both diagnosis and treatment, but now, a team of Korean researchers has found a key cause behind bipolar disorder.
Without a specific protein, a problem occurs in nerve transmission, which leads to uncontrollable excitement or depression.

"In order to transmit signals, nerve cells need to form dendritic spines. The absence of the key protein results in a dramatic change in spinal formation, causing an imbalance in signal transmission."

When the researchers removed the protein in mice, they showed manic behaviors resembling those exhibited by people with bipolar disorder.

"By making the connection between the protein and bipolar disorder, we were able to create animal models. With the models, we can test various drugs and eventually create effective mood stabilizing drugs."

The researchers added that the protein not only causes bipolar disorder, but also contributes to autism and obsessive compulsive disorder.
They expect their finding to open doors to new treatments for a variety of mental illnesses.

I hope this isn’t just click bait. I’m bipolar and would love to have drugs which do not just suppress my symptoms. I would like a true treatment where I could be normal again.

SO WHERE IS THE NEW MEDICATION BASED ON THIS FINDING????
10 years bipolar, depression has ruined my life. And noone seems to care to find some cure or some relief. I feel like all the meds I’m taking are basically just sort of work but not really. I have very bad fatigue that’s my main symptom. It’s impossible to live like this

I was diagnosed with Bipolar since my teenage, spent my whole life fighting Bipolar. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

The protien they are refering to is Philosolipids. I know because I researched on Google to find out the name. I bought some Philosolipids in suppliment form online. It is helping me to sleep well and feel relaxed. After mixing it with vitamin E oil, I feel even more better. I wish I could thank the researcher personally or send a card. Does anybody know what laboratory in Korea she works in?

I treat myself with good diet, exercise and nootropics like thesis and qualia mind. Not perfect but manageable. No pharma. Always side effects.

What is the protein called? Is there a way to create a treatment using supplements that introduce said protein?

The real question is: what causes the absence of the protein?..Medical field/pharma=biggest business in the world

Being on lithium and Lamictal for 15 years off and on I now rapid cycle. Never used to before. All the doc will do is add more meds. When I tried to wean with the doctors help, he said 3 weeks I should be off 1450 MG of lithium. Well of course I crashed hard, called the doc and what did he do? Back on the lithium. So for the 4th time, I'm now gonna wean off very slowly. I have the memory of a 90 year old and I'm 29, 0 energy, migraines etc. So in my case these meds are making things a lot worse.

Instead of drug treatment how about looking at it from a nutrient perspective and what is lacking or what is a person getting too much of in their diet? Not everything needs a chemical drug which can and do cause other health problems which can be even worse than the issue being treated.

I had 3 Manic episodes. And the root cause of these Manic episodes was Nicotine. When i Quit taking Nicotine ( Smoking) my symptoms disappear. So nicotine was causing rush of neurotransmitters in brain causing Mania or hypomania. I'm now symptoms free from several years. (No medication)

I wonder what kind of key protein this is, and why in one part they say “removal of protein” causes manic episode, and at the end they say “the protein causes” bipolar disorder
