As a woman in her childbearing years transitions to perimenopause and eventually enters menopause, a host of physiological changes happen inside her body—starting with the natural decline in estrogen and progesterone, which can pose challenges to the brain and body later in life if not properly supported.

More and more women are becoming curious about better managing this phase of life. Often, their questions range from hormone replacement therapy to fasting, meal timing, protein intake, exercise, strength training, how to get quality sleep, and so much more.

Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Cynthia Thurlow to answer all your questions regarding hormonal health and how middle-aged women can tailor their diet and lifestyle to feel empowered and set themselves up for optimal health.

Dhru delves into Cynthia’s personal life and asks her what she does to keep her hormones balanced, maintain her body composition, and prioritize self-care and sleep (which starts when she wakes up in the morning). They also discuss hot topics like drinking alcohol, when to take a caffeine break, progesterone therapy, and how to create an intermittent fasting practice that works best for you.

Cynthia Thurlow is a nurse practitioner, CEO and founder of the Everyday Wellness Project, and international speaker, with over 13 million views for her second TEDx talk (“Intermittent Fasting: Transformational Technique”). With over 20 years of experience in health and wellness, Cynthia is a globally recognized expert in intermittent fasting and nutritional health and has been featured on ABC, FOX5, KTLA, CW, Medium, Entrepreneur, and The Megyn Kelly Show.

In this episode, Dhru and Cynthia dive into:
-The macronutrient goals Cynthia hits in a day
-If working out in a fasted state is beneficial for most women
-Signs that you’ve overextended yourself or are out of balance
-How Cynthia prioritizes sleep
-Bioidentical hormone therapy and how to know if it’s right for you
-Understanding your relationship with snacking and if you really need to do it
-How dehydration might be causing your fatigue

I love Cynthia's advice about fish oil supplements. (Instead of taking Omega 3 supplements, she recommends eating at least one fatty-fish meal per week.) I have always worried about the rancidity of the fats in fish supplements. It seems so much more natural to just eat one serving of wild salmon a week.

I am almost 71 and have never even thought about having my hormones checked. Although about 13 years ago I did mention it to my doctor (female doctor too) and she she said
" Hormones, what hormones, you don't have any! ) I didn't think that was very positive & thought ok, I feel good so don't worry about it. But, I am one of those people who rarely go to the doctor. I do not have annual checkups and on no medication. It would be about 6 years since had any blood tests done and they were ok. I am only a few kilos overweight. Walk 3 ks most days, do some strength training using body weight ( pull ups, push ups etc ) and pretty active in the garden, go fishing, camping etc. I eat a reasonable amount of protein after listening to Gabrielle Lyon. My memory has never been great but I think that is because I am almost always thinking of something else & not concentrating. But maybe I should get my hormones checked. Just have to find a good doctor as live in a small town in Tasmania, Australia. I am really enjoying listening to your talks Cynthia. I have always thought fasting was a great healer. I do intermittent fasting and have done several 24 to 36 hour fasts over the years. Thank you for another great podcast.

If your 15-year-old is having trouble sleeping and wants to take melatonin maybe he shouldn’t be drinking espresso after school?🤷🏻‍♂️

Cynthia feels like my twin.. I love everything addressed in this podcast. I can relate to her on almost everything except I love coffee 😂. Thank you for touching on the plant based diet relative to insulin resistance. She has great insight on setting your core basics well before adding in all the extras.

"I had to dumb myself down" - Cynthia "the female Scott Stiner" Thurlow.

Really good podcast. I think the most important thing she repeated in this podcast was to experiment for yourself. Figure out what works best for you. Too often, people want a pre-packaged solution to their problems, which is understandable. However, there's a good chance that solution won't be the best for you.

What supplements would be best for someone with a good health between 30 to 35 to save ourselves in the future from reducing hormones etc

Really good talk. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Love Cynthia’s content - however the interviewer did a really good job of ensuring a breadth of topics was covered

Great podcast :) It's always interesting to get different perspectives on diet, exercise, fasting, etc. and see how it compares. Then realizing some things are repeated which reinforces how beneficial they are. So many things Dr. Thurlow said I relate to ~ thank you Dhru for another great discussion.

Great discussion. I too am watching my mother deteriorate thanks to the Women's Health Initiative study. I can save myself but frustrated I can't save my mom. She is in her 70s not one doctor in Canada will prescribe estrogen for her. It's too late to start. But she knew when she was in her 40s she needed this and her doctors cut her off pointing to this study. How many lives have been destroyed by this study.

Great content. Unfortunately I can’t take melatonin because it causes seizures.

So informative, the breadth covered is fantastic. Dr Thurlow is so clear in how she delivers her information . Any thoughts on vitamin D supplementation? Thank you so much, Caroline, Surrey, UK

I can't take melatonin either because one of the side effects listed for my blood pressure medicine, Telmisartin, is "death".
