32-Bit vs 64-Bit - The Advantage (New Video in Description!)

The difference between 64 bit and 32 bit operating systems has not been that well explained to the consumer market for personal computer users. There is a lot of confusion as to what is so great about a 64 bit system. In this video, we take a look at the basics of bits, and how they are applied to random access memory (RAM).

Check out our new video! 32-Bit vs 64-Bit Smartphones and Tablets

Hmm that may confuse some. It does not make your computer faster people that misunderstand.

Think about it this way:
>Be worker
>Work at a sorting factory sorting Pokeballs
>Only have two hands
>Work efficiently when Pokeballs come in at 2 Pokeballs per second
>Work piles up when Pokeballs come in at 3 Pokeballs per second

Alternate Universe:
>Be worker
>Work at a sorting factory sorting Pokeballs
>Have four hands
>Work efficiently when Pokeballs come in at  2 Pokeballs per second
>Work efficiently when Pokeballs come in at  3 Pokeballs per second

Having more hands won't make sorting 2 Pokeballs per second any faster, just that having more hands lets you be able to sort more at a time.

My desktop is running on an Intel i7 with 16GB of RAM. Even when I have multiple virtual machines running, I never observed the system pulling more than 8GB. Yet, certain apps (such as Mozilla Firefox) run slow and "Not Responding" all the time. It's not just a resource problem - sometimes, the software is just poorly developed.

I'm glad you brought that up, but keep in mind, these videos are made to be on the same topic, just refined. Take a look at our fourth one if you haven't already. In that video, we talked about color depth, audio depth, and other parts of math that we did not cover in this video. But we also talked about new things in this video. Such as how it effects gaming, how to check system types on Windows, how to upgrade Windows versions, the difference between an HDD and RAM, etc.

1:14 '' we'll talk more about RAM in a bit '' i see what you did there =D

It's good that you mention that because I was thinking of throwing that into this video. As of right now, it's not going to make a huge difference, but as smartphones get more RAM built in, it will become useful. It's future-proofing, to say the least.

and you can all thank amd for it. even on intel the 64 bit process is named amd64.

We really appreciate hearing that, thank you.

5:37 You cannot install a 64-bit OS onto a 32-bit system, sorry.

Alright, I did some research on it, and I found out that it is a non-volitale storage medium. To be honest, I haven't looked into it much until now, so I thank you for bringing this up. I'll get back to you with anything I find out.

Has anyone ever told you your voice is perfect for game tutorials? specifically the rts genre.

That's not a bad idea. We'll consider that. But to speed the process up, I can explain a bit here.
A hybrid drive will use an SSD and an HDD. The HDD is used for the larger groups of files, and the SSD is used for the most commonly accessed files. That way, the things you do the most on your computer will load the quickest, but you still have space to store a lot of data. It's basically a 'budget' SSD.

I think i'll stick to Amiga, thank you very much.

Our new vid on Thursday should cover that! Thanks for the suggestion.

That doesn't mean that the motherboard manufacturers have 64 bit drivers. You may try as you wish but there are no 64 bit supported drivers

64 bit is better. But if your RAM is under 3.89GB, you ****ed your PC

We make these videos like how text books are made. Every so often they are updated with a new look, and maybe some tidbits, but they teach the same basic principles.

Sorry, but you missed a pretty important point about 64-bit... you can run 64-bit CPU instructions!

As mentioned in the video, there are tricks to use larger address space on 32-bit machines (like x86 PAE, although there are some limitations like max.process mem allocation). It is just that the manufacturers and software developers decided that it is a better idea to move to 64bit instead. 64bit instructions do benefit the processing speed, at least in some cases.
Machines using memory address space larger than the general-purpose register word size have been around there for a long time. After all, most of the old 8-bit computers supported 16bit addressing (=64kbyte) as 8bit address (=256 bytes) was just too small. Most 32bit machines did not do that because we thought 4GB was "enough". (which was true, when they were making 80486 PCs.)

Terrible idea to install a x64 bit on 2GB of RAM using windows.
