Another good tip: when the soil is that dry, it's hydrophobic. So when you water, it'll run through the open cracks inside in the pot and run to the bottom and drain. Like he said, just mist over the top layer and wait about ten minutes. You need to let the soil absorb. Then do it again and wait. By then, you'll most likely be ok for full watering without it all running out the bottom, taking nutrients with it.

It takes time to water a really dry pot, but it'll worth it to spend that that time. Obviously, it's better to let it stay consistent with moisture, but it happens.

One more thing (just had coffee), if your watering is inconsistent and you let it dry like that all the time, you increase your chances for a blossom endrot. Most think it's a lack of calcium that cause that, but in my experience, it's inconsistent watering.
