Why Obi-Wan Changed His Lightsaber Form? Why Obi-Wan Changed His Lightsaber Form? When Obi-Wan trained under Qui-Gon Jinn, he followed his master in using form IV Ataru, but would later change to form III Soresu. The reason for his change, was the sight of the fateful duel of Qui-Gon and Maul on Naboo, in which the Jedi master demonstrated the weakness of Ataru, as fatigue started to set in from his acrobatic movements. The lack of defence convinced Obi-Wan to change to form III, which harnessed his focus to mould him into the ultimate Jedi, and to deflect 20 strikes a second. But due to its offensive limitations, Obi-Wan still included elements of Ataru into the form, which allowed him to be effective, against both lightsaber duellists and blaster wielding enemies.
