What if you could move from one activity to another without losing time and students losing their attention? I would argue that the part of class that steals the most time and makes teachers lose their minds is the transition period between activities. Today I want to help you remove the stress, the anxiety, the madness of transitions.

Just got home, was feeling pretty down and not feeling like a did my best job today, partly due to not getting the best attention. Thanks reynolds ❤ this helps a lot.

Telling students how long you need their attention and how long they have to complete a direction is so very important. Leaders are repeaters, most excellent! Breaking down tasks into smaller steps is another great tip. Awesome video!

Allotted time to perform with clear expectations... easy enough... I loved your milk crates video and it inspired me to set my own system. I have color folders for each of my classes with an assigned drop box for each period. I ask a student to hand them out every class. Keep the videos coming and please show us the new abode once you get there.

I reaaaally enjoyed this short video you made - because with the long ones after a difficult day, no matter how interesting they are, I tend to feel sleepy 😊 - i loved your "live from classroom" examples, these remind so much of my own classroom, one question, how do we know when it's the right time to make a transition? How we read the signs? Thank you for helping!

I noticed that doing the "presidential pause" during direct instruction helps redirect their attention, so transition can go smoother

Where in NM? I live outside of Silver City and am an instructional coach for the Cobre District. I was in Pecos, NM for nine years but am originally from Austin, TX. We have a lot in common, including the fact that I started teaching at 27 and also got my post-bacc certification. Our teaching values and style are quite aligned as well.
