Country Between USA & Canada 🇺🇸🇨🇦

Transcript: Many Americans don’t know there used to be a country between the United States and Canada.

So how did it exist in the first place, and what happened?

Well, after the Treaty of Paris of 1783, the border between the US and British North America was defined, and it included a portion of the northwesternmost head of the Connecticut River.

Both countries had different views on where the borders should have been. British North America asserted one interpretation, while the US claimed another. Both countries tried to administer the disputed area, but the residents grew tired of being taxed by both countries and declared their independence.

On July 9, 1832, the Republic of Indian Stream was formed. The US eventually recognized the republic, while British North America did not and continued to tax them.

Because of this, the Republic of Indian Stream requested to join the US.

So, in 1835, the New Hampshire militia occupied the area without any resistance from British North America, and it was subsequently incorporated into the state of New Hampshire, becoming part of the US.

I live in New hampshire, and let me tell you that area is woods, woods and woods. I'm surprised there were residents to tax in the first place.

That’s actually genius to give up taxing it and let them be mad at one place and not the other

Went up to hike in that area this summer, while in Pittsburg (the only town there of about 800), they had a surprisingly robust outdoor memorial to Indian Stream. Had a pre-recorded message playing about the history of the country and everything. Glad to see that the locals still take pride in the nation.

I currently live in Pittsburgh and I think this is the simplest way to say it without going through the full history

It should also be noted that this was a very common occurrence across the border between the United States and British Canada. Not the whole independent Nation part but the border disputes, One even almost caused a full-out war over a landmass no greater than A small island. We often forget that our greatest allies used to be our worst enemies, And our worst enemies used to be our greatest allies.

Im pretty sure Vermont used to be a country between the USA and Canada for a short period of time as thanks to dispute between New York and New Hampshire over the area which caused them to fight for independence separate from both the USA and England. After a short bout of independence, Vermont agreed to join the USA as the 14th state.
