Description:

Did you know there used to be a country between the United States and Canada that not many people know about? This area was originally part of the British Empire, but due to taxation imposed by the British, independence was declared in 1776.

In the 1783 Treaty of Paris, the border between the US and British Canada was defined, with a portion being the northwesternmost head of the Connecticut River. However, both countries had different views on this border, leading to disputes.

Frustrated with the situation, the residents declared independence, forming the Republic of Indian Stream in 1832. The US recognized this new country, but British Canada did not and continued to tax its residents. As a result, the Republic of Indian Stream requested to join the US. The New Hampshire militia invaded the area with no response from British Canada, and the Republic of Indian Stream became part of the US.

There used to be a country between the United States and Canada that not many people know about. You see, this area was part of the British Empire, but because of the taxation imposed by the Brits, independence was declared in 1776.

In the 1783 Treaty of Paris, the border between the US and British Canada was defined, and a portion of it was the northwesternmost head of the Connecticut River. The two countries had different views on this, with British Canada asserting one interpretation of the border and the US claiming another.

Both countries tried to administer the disputed area, but the residents were not very happy with this, so they declared independence. In 1832, the Republic of Indian Stream was formed. The US recognized it, while British Canada did not, and they continued to tax the residents. Because of this, the Republic of Indian Stream requested to join the US. The New Hampshire militia invaded the area with no response from British Canada, and the Republic of Indian Stream became part of the US.

It wasn't taxation that was the issue. It was taxation without representation.

I think you meant to write Treaty and not Threaty. Unless the treaty felt like a threat. 😊 Great video. Learning a lot. Thanks for sharing.

It also happened on italy
(Republic of Cospaia)
The republic of cospaia was created after Tuscany and the papal states remade their borders in 1440. The reno river divided the two states, but the thing none of them knew was that the reno river divides in 2 rivers, and inside that part was a tiny village named cospaia. When the abitants of the village knew about the unclaimed territory, they fastly gained indipendence. It lasted 500 years until the two states decided to fix this territorial issue. The republic of cospaia was also famous cuz of the tobacco. It was illegal in the whole europe but not in this country.
⚠️The source is my memory, i dont remember all⚠️
