Hiatal (Hiatus) Hernia Signs & Symptoms (& Why They Occur)

Hiatal (Hiatus) Hernia is a gastrointestinal condition involving herniation of part of the stomach through the esophageal hiatus, which is an opening in the diaphragm. A hiatal hernia may occur due to a variety of factors, including obesity, increasing age, and chronic constipation. Due to the herniation of the stomach, the lower esophageal sphincter may open inappropriately, leading to a variety of signs and symptoms of reflux. In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms, along with the complications, of having a hiatal hernia.

I've experienced all these same symptoms on a daily basis for almost 2 years now (since having Covid) the heart palpitations are wicked. It's like I can't breathe for a split second. Every test I have done comes back normal. They told me it was solely anxiety. I went on a dozen different medications, began treating my anxiety, even changed careers to a much less stressful job and still experiencing the same symptoms every single day. This is horrible. It's so depressing.

Thank you so much! I was rushed to the emergency room because I was having chest pain and shortness of breath. They did all kinds of heart tests and said my heart was strong. thank God! Then they did an endoscopy and said that I have a hiatal hernia and just to take prilosec every morning. I was so glad I wasn't having a heart attack. Thank you for explaining all the symptoms of a hiatal hernia including heart attack symptoms. Good job! God bless you!

One treatment for a hernia is getting a neck adjustment. C3, C4, C5, keeps the diaphragm alive! The phrenic nerve controls the diaphragm and runs down C3, C4, and C5. An unadjusted neck can put pressure on the phrenic nerve causing the diaphragm to open and allow the stomach to slide up. Most likely the neck is subluxated and an adjustment and manual pulling down of the stomach will help. I know this works from personal experience. Not all chiropractors will know this for some reason.

In the past Ive had heart palpitations after meals, breathing problems, dizziness, coughing up clear mucus and lightheaded. Did alot of blood test but doctors didn’t find anything. Years past and I started to put on a lot of weight. I went from 184 pounds two 248. I started to get really sick in March, symptoms include: gerd, weight loss, feeling full after eating really small amount, indigestion, regurgitation, always burping etc.
I was diagnosed with Hiatus Hernia in June. Omeprazole wasn’t helping im now on nexium for 2 months now. Im really depressed reading these comments make me feel good and bad. I hope we get the help and guidance we need. Ohh and im only 23 at 224 pounds atm.

Edit: new symptoms include eye and ear pain, chronic sinus infections and brain fog

I have been trying to find out what is causing my very bad stomach problems (anemia, fatigue, gas, GERD, difficulty swallowing, palpitations) for over half a year and finally after a year of getting strung along being told it is anxiety or IBS or I just need fiber I got fed with no further screening and I scheduled an endoscopy in mexico. Wish me luck I don't know if it is an hernia or ulcer or something worse but I hope to find solutions to my health problems soon

I just had an endoscopic procedure done because food was lodged in my esophagus and I couldn't even keep my own spit down. They found that I have a Hiatal Hernia, which explains a number of things I've been experiencing. I've always had trouble swallowing, and had to have water on hand to flush food down when it gets stuck. As an adult I developed heartburn and acid reflux, and a chronic cough. I've never really brought up the acid reflux or heartburn to a doctor, but the cough was always written off by my primary care as allergies, and the swallowing problems were always met with "chew your food more thoroughly". Its kinda nice to finally know that there was something else going on all this time.

Would a hiatal hernia also contribute to not being able to catch your breath during physical exertion?

I have most of these symptoms and they all hit me at the same time! Well, except for heart burn. Thats been getting so much worse the past couple yrs. Just 🤮 But yea, 10weeks ago it hit me, shortness of breath, stabbing chest pains (i assume my diaphragm? Thought it was a cracked rib at first), blood in vomit, melena 🤮, weird cough, super weak, couldn't walk to the kitchen and back to lay down, fainted 3 times. Thats a little better now but I'm still shakey and cant be on my feet but like, 20mins 🥺 GI scope is still a month away. Im worried

i dont burp a lot...but when i have "a flare up" it feels like something is pinched in my sternum (not my throat) its very painful, only happens rarely (maybe 2-3x a year) when eating, i start to heave up foam, lasts about a hour. Feels very bruised for a few days afterwards.
Very scary very painful

Thank You
had a bad time with it last night, made me cry.
