I used a 120 V Krups coffee mill for about 10 seconds at 240 V, probably brought in Cyprus from Illinois by my mother in 1994, but it worked without any serious problems. The only thing was that it was vibrating like a concrete vibrator. After that, I bought a transformer and when I tried it on the transformer, it was working fine. I believe the real problem would be for sure if I did the same with a toaster, or anything that converts electricity directly into heat. However, 10 seconds don't seem enough to cause any damage, at least when it comes to electric motors

Accidentally plugging a 110-volt appliance into a 220-volt outlet is not uncommon here in the Philippines because despite our voltage of 220 volts our outlets are American-type NEMA 1-15R which means a plug from an American appliance can fit into our 220-volt outlet damaging them. They require a step-down transformer to be used here although some modern American appliances have universal voltages that accept from 110 - 240 volts and don't need a step-down transformer.
