I think you only miss one point about the air cargo revenue.

Most budget airline charge for checked bag, making rooms in their cargo hold to sell it to frieght companies. Routes with strong and stable cargo demand can make the route viable.

Many budget airline can't even cover it's cost from passenger revenue. Without the cargo business, many international route won't exist in the first place.
