In this video: Is your Game interactive? Learn some Quick Tips to improve how interactive your RPG Maker Game is.

My Website

If this is your first time seeing one of my videos on the channel, then a huge 'Welcome to Level Up Design.' I share tips and tricks, tutorials, and overall RPG-related content on this channel.

If you want even more knowledge on the general topic of game design then here are some of the books I read when studying games design in university.

Good game design happens when you view your game from as many perspectives as possible, and award-winning author Jesse Schell presents over 100 sets of questions to ask yourself as you build, play and change your game until you finalise your design.

A unified model for looking at all kinds of games, from board games and sports to computer and video games. As active participants in game culture, the authors have written Rules of Play as a catalyst for innovation, filled with new concepts, strategies, and methodologies for creating and understanding games.

The more interactive items in one's game, the better.

Good old "Turn Left, Turn Right, Turn Up.." When I first started RPG Maker, I was so confused. I had no idea why static objects were being made to turn around 3 times in place... Now the sequence is like an old friend.. :D

If you want to slow the movement down. I recommend adding around five frames of wait time. After left and right. I find this lets the movement play and have it a bit more visable. Without it feeling slow.

Thank you LvL Up Design for the vid.

I spent like two hours reading through and trying to understand the written self-help guide on how to do this before giving up, and you managed to explain it 100x better in 2 minutes. 10/10 thank you so much

While I'm currently still in the process of building my game's story and base, all of these videos already have me start to put things down that I'll want to add or improve upon.
So thanks for giving so much inspirations and ideas! Love your videos so far :D

This encourages exploration. Very good if you hide items behind there, not just inside chests

Yea, in a loot economy game where your party either contains treasure hunters/explorers or thieves this makes sense. Those type of characters check everything.

Traditional heroes on a mission tend to only loot what's obvious/right in front of them, in which case 99% of objects shouldn't be intractable. But it should have some kind of built in mechanic to show what can be checked to save players time.

Game preferences aside this is still good advice for 90% games based around exploration.

I'm really happy I'm not the only one that's made the "Turn Down for what" joke. :D

Whoaaa!! Its visually impressive to the player that you raided some poor sap’a home.

*que the quest where the player hero chara is kicked out of town by a hidden variable that counted for each raid*

I use a small glow on everything that can be "used".

Before that I used a "!" mark in objects within 4 tales range to show they can be used.

I think it's a nice QoL in these kind of games. It's better than click in everything like a lunatic to see if something happens.

Btw if you are going to do more puzzle, could you do the mirror one? It's a very common puzzle in RPG, but I never managed to do it right in MZ. (You need to guide the light to a specific place to open a door).
