“Don’t confuse your free time with being available.”

I saw my buddy Jay Shetty post someone’s quote about this a few weeks ago and I can’t stop thinking about it.

I have a lot of trouble just slowing down and doing nothing when I have free time

It’s like I’m addicted to being busy and I feel like I have to fill every free moment I have.

I made this video to remind myself, and to remind you, to carve out moments where you’re doing nothing.

Your free time is time where you are free to do whatever makes you feel a little bit more free from the busyness, the obligations, the distractions, or the guilt of living in a world where we need to be available 24/7.

Take this as a sign to stop being so available for everyone else.

Tag friend who needs the reminder to take a little free time, too.

Rest.
Extremely underrated.
Not laziness.
It's a necessity.

I enjoy my mornings, I'm 65 years old now and I thank God I don't have much stress anymore. I've done raising kids, married for 42 years, took care of my husband for five years till he passed. Now is my time, I have time to do my devotion, reading, learning, workout, watch movies, clean my house, do groceries, go to Starbucks for coffee ☕, buy flowers... pray anytime. Life is bliss. Thank you Mel for validation.

I understand what my free time is.
Making everyone else understand is another thing.

Yes that’s me 24/7! Why do I think my existence is solely to be fixing, moving, working? I’ve forgotten how to stop, relax, reset and live.

I totally needed this today!! My children think that because I'm retired, I don't have a life and can just take their kids to every appointment. I'm tired of planning my time around them!!

Well said Mel! Any sentence that starts with "I should" is a definite no for me.

Just like sleep. Sitting alone gives me time to connect with myself and God. There is no time like couch time, riverside time, woods time. It is so good for my soul.

Powerful. My free time does not mean I'm available.

I learned this 4 yrs ago when I crashed and burnt out from the stress, over doing and neglected myself to help others and work hard just to survive!!!
It’s NOT WORTH IT, STOP, breathe and relax, you are WORTH IT!!!
Trust me the crash is painful, exhausting and UGLY!!!🥶🙃😵‍💫🤯
I am 66 yrs old and my stamina is NOT what it used to be……so coming back is long and exhausting!!!
Self care ROCKS and SELF LOVE ROCKS and you are worth it!!
LOVE YOU MEL, you are so REAL!!!
Blessings from Chicago!!

This is me all the time. It manifested into illness. The obligation and busyness. I'm working on changing that. Thanks for the reminder, Mel ❤

I totally agree! I have such guilt with doing "nothing" I picked up a book and spent the day with myself. It has been glorious!!

People don't realize that doing this is the best advice ever!

It's phenomenal how we guilt and pressure ourselves to meet obligations, even self-imposing them! What an authentic reminder to slow down and just be! The world will still be there tomorrow! Thanks Mel!

I do this ALL THE TIME! My 22 year old daughter has to remind me "Nah, Ma. You're good. RELAX! You're always busy. You've earned the right to enjoy yourself and do NOTHING." I appreciate her so much for reminding me.

Basically, stop feeling that you have to FILL that free time. WITH something. A task or a chore. It's okay for free time, to just be, FREE time.
Thanks, Mel😉
Great reminder
