DIY/ Change a DeWalt Router Bit!
This easy-to-follow tutorial shows you how to safely remove/replace router bits, and shows you how to install different size router bits!

Installing router bits are done quite similarly in different routers, so this video may help you even if you are not using a DeWalt Router

I came across the problem of having the wrong size shank in my router, and this video also covers how to change the shank size so you can use different-sized router bits.

I hope this video can help you out!

Thanks for the video, I was wondering why my router bit wouldn't stay in the tool and I didn't realise there was another nut.

Thank you for the information. I got lost at 1:13 where you explained about the router bit size. My questions are; 1) Is the shank 1/4 or 1/2 inch. or 2) does it have an adapter to change the router bit from 1/4 " to 1/2"? 3) The model DWP611 which I bought today seems to have only 1/4" collet nut. Nowhere in the manual, does it say anything about the shank size or router bit size 1/4" or 1/2". Very confused.

What size is that other collet? Mine only came with the one 1/4 inch.

This router comes with a 1/4" collet and an 8mm collet (5/16"). So unfortunately it is not suitable for a 1/2" router bit. Still a great tool for more intricate work! Hope this helps anyone that has been wondering the same thing!

The instructions for this model (I think it’s the same model as you have) talk about the manual ratchet method for installing the bit. I’ve no idea what that means and I couldn’t understand it from the instructions. It says: without removing the wrench from the collet nut, release pressure on the spindle lock button. Then, with the wrench still on the collet nut, reverse the tightening direction to reset the wrench position. Depress the spindle lock button again and turn the wrench clockwise. Repeat the procedure until the collet nut reaches desired tightness. No idea how this helps or what it’s supposed to achieve. Any idea?

What if the quarter inch bit is to big for the guard opening? Thanks

You missed one VERY important detail when installing the bit, and this is from a 40 yr veteran cabinet builder here, as well as other master woodworkers out there. Always, always, your bit in all the way while the collet is loose, then back out the bit about 1/8- 1/4 ", then tighten your collet on the bit. This will give your bit a more secure, tight hold evenly all along the bit.

Hi, quick question is it better to use 8 mm bits then Quarter inch as I think they might be stronger?

Yeah, don't ever lose those collets for your router, I lost the 1/4" collet for my milwaukee die grinder, they wanted $75 to replace it

Could one of you help me? I've never used a router. Ive honestly never done any wood work. I'm making a bookcase and i just installed my bit and tried on a piece of scrap wood. i tore the board up and it almost jumped out of my hand. All i want is the make the space that the shelf boards will sit in. How do I adjust the depth to make a slot for shelf to sit in when the board is 3/4 in deep? My bit is 3/4 straight.

My dumbass didn’t see there’s an extra slot thing for smaller bits 😂 cheers!

Yeah this didn’t work for me, I have the exact same setup, I only got one collet which says 0.8 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great video btw! To the point.
