Dad battled 4 years, a week after he had the psa test he ended up in the ER in severe pain. Dad passed in 2020, he was only 78. If he had been screened earlier it might have added a few more years, miss you Dad.

It’s important to note that men abstain from ejaculation 24-48 hours before their blood draw for a PSA test, otherwise risking a false high reading and a false sense of alarm! This happened to me a year ago when my PSA went from 3.9 to 5.1 (having ejaculated w/i 24 hrs of the blood draw) but down to 2.9 a couple of weeks later (after having been abstinent for 48 hours prior)

BPH is actually fairly common for men if you live past 50 or 60, and it can be a real pain. Amazing how it takes 2 prominent world figures to draw attention to it. I had it at 53. I got really sick at first, followed by a misdiagnosis. It stopped me in my tracks for a couple months and I had an operation eventually. I was healthy before it hit me. And believe I’m healthy now. I started paying closer attention to what I ate.

I’m a 56 year old Air Force veteran. Myself and 2 others I worked with in my local Air Force unit were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and we are all battling with treatments. If you are a Veteran, do not hesitate to ask your doctor or the VA for a PSA test! This cancer is very common in veterans! PSA test may have saved our life’s!

My PSA was 11.4 so i had to go through that horrible cancer test. Turns out a medication i was taking caused a false reading
The medication was Lamictal.

Michael Douglas had it, my dad had it...just treat early and survivability very likely (pancreatic still much much worse).

I eat 3 ounces of organic pumpkin seeds daily. I do it mostly for the magnesium, but also as an experiment to see if it keeps me from developing prostate problems.

There is no over-treating a slow growing cancer. And you can MRI suspected prostate cancer. If it shows cancer, then biopsy to be sure and get a Gleason score. I’ve seen too many men do that “watch and wait” thing and then die a hideous death with pain that no amount of morphine could quell.

I’ve used fasting to lower my PSA score to normal, along with a healthy diet and regular walking.

I started to take Tomsulosin a short time back. It works. I now put out a full voided specimen. Glad I followed through.

What to do is a good question. I had a friend that had a high PSA but the DRE test showed no swelling. The DR. checked again in 60 days and the PSA was increased but the finger found nothing. After consultation he elected to have surgery. His gland was full of cancer on the side that the finger couldn't tough. Prostate was removed 15 years ago and he is active and healthy today.

You left out Dexter King, MLK's son, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer three year before his recent death at age 62. It would be great if the media spent as much time on prostate cancer as on breast cancer. They are both pretty much equal in occurrence in their gender related occurrence for male and female patients and the fact that the genes in prostate cancer and breast cancer can be the same genes involved in each disease. No one ever discusses the potential untoward effects of the treatment for prostate cancer. As a prostate cancer patient in remission the media's lack of attention to prostate cancer pisses me off.

Always demand a *digital exam* and do not totally depend on a PSA result. 👆

Most men suffering from prostate issues are those with a bad diet of fast foods and processed sugar, who daily consume soda and desert sugars. Sugar causes inflammation throughout the body. Sugar also feeds cancer cells to grow strong. The best thing you can do for yourself is cut out all fast food and processed sugars from your diet and take natural supplements that decrease inflammation like Ginger, turmeric, vitamin C, green tea, and others. Prescription drugs will not help much if you do not cut out the sugar. And prescription drugs only help the symptoms and never provide the cure while harming your body in many ways.

The prostate may cause problems later in life, but it sure provides a lot of pleasure to men in their twenties and thirties. ;)

According to research eating raw pepitas (pumpkin seeds) regularly may help in preventing prostate problems. I'll be 74 this coming Halloween and I've been eating pepitas for a long time. So far I don't have any prostate problem.

Dr Lapuch well details the growing controversy regarding PSA. It’s a profoundly variable serum test (it varies day to day)and many doctors debate its accuracy. I’m an MD with no family history of prostate cancer; I do not get PSA testing.
