The best camera to use... is the one you've got. Great insights. Thanks David.

Brilliant. When I saw the Community post my first thought was "this is Instagram, the photos have been crushed down to a fraction of their original size to fit on my phone's screen." I didn't even bother to comment because I knew it wasn't a fair test.
I recently saw a comment from a photographer who claimed that he never used a 28mm equivalent lens because people on social media thought his photos were shot on an iPhone. My immediate reaction was that it was almost certainly his style that looked like an iPhone photo, even though he was using what he reported as 4, 000 dollars worth of gear. A 4, 000 dollar photo squeezed onto a phone screen isn't going to look "better" because of the expensive gear. How it was taken is what makes it look good.

Excellent !!!! As a M43 guy I can’t stop rants on You Tube that the format is dead etc, etc Full frame is the way to go, APS C is for enthusiasts not pros ! Forget about Mr RAW down the road from me near Philly! Every camera as a tool will have its strengths and weakness ( I have M43 Lumix / Olympus BUT have Full Frame / APSC Nikon and love them too !) We are hung up on gear .. yes there are improvements as time goes on which will help in one’s enjoyment or professional calling .The professional may need to evaluate what manufacturer, model, lenses will be suited to earn an income . The enthusiast, amateur you have more latitude. The lesson as evidenced in the present You Tube snd the one w/ four pictures pick the camera .. a ten year old ( I have a Nikon digital old timer D300s still take beautiful photos ) Yes, but good lenses and learn the art, join like folks, go out and photograph…. but learn and have fun !! Great You Tube presentation 👍👍

I'd say most people at some point are obsessed with GAS. There are benefits of modern cameras such as things like eye af, dynamic range, burst modes, cleaner ISO and better af hit rate but as you mentioned, the cameras you use today is every bit as good today as it was the day it was released. Over the last 10-12 years I've never been disapointed with any camera. These days there are no bad cameras just different cameras. Some offer a little bit more and some a little bit less but they are all really good. Then again, I'm always happy with my Holga 120 negatives :)

I love shooting with a Canon 20d from 2004 (8.2 megapixel) with a nifty fifty. It's all about your photog's eye and how fly your Lightroom game is - u nailed it. Plus, even more importantly, I think it's fun as hell shooting on "ancient", el cheapo cameras

So true, some of my best images are from way back with my Canon Rebel X.

I was a wedding and portrait photographer in the 1980s to early 2000s. I started my digital journey with a Nikon D1X, D100, and Fujifilm S-3 Pro. I quit doing paying photography jobs and took about a fifteen year break. I sold 20x24 and 20x30 inch prints to clients with those cameras (5-6MP). I recently traded my old film gear for newer Nikon bodies (D700, D7100, D7200). The D1X died years ago (was $5500.00 US new), the S3 still works but the viewing screen died years ago. I recently picked up another Fuji S-3 that everything works on at a very good price. I don't feel the need for any of the newer offerings and I'm very happy with the gear I have. Enjoy your channel, just subscribed. :)

You talk much sense, David. I often grab my Olympus E-410 because it's light, compact and I enjoy using it more than my 5D MkII

You have lots of videos I can learn from. I have been binge watching your videos for a week now. I watch daily while driving from work to home, then weekends as well.

I do most of my shooting with a Nikon D200, D90 and a scruffy Panasonic Lumix GF6...I also own a Sony A6000 which I hardly ever take out. Sometimes I think about selling all of them and buying something more up to date - but as you say it won't make me a better photographer 😁...

Amazing wisdom soooo true I’ve purchased loads of cameras these last three years. I noticed my photography never changed. I recently found out personally I just need a camera that connects with me and inspires me to make images.

Great video. I still have in my arsenal, D90, D7100, D3300, EPL1, G7, all great cameras. They complement my newer FF and M43 bodies. Love shooting with old camera bodies.

How many times have I been told that I won't be able to get good shots using "that" gear?!!! Answer, never by a customer, buyer or publisher, but multiple times by photography enthusiasts - how strange. The fact is, I can take crap shots on whatever type of camera I choose, and occasionally I get a good shot too!!! Excellent topic for the video David - I nearly answered your "match the image to camera" post - dodged a bullet there and avoided making myself look dumb.

Yep - word! I learned a lot about the technical side of photography by dispelling all these myths, no compelling reason to leave m43 for me anytime soon. My 12mp pen mini from 2012 has become my main tool to shoot portraits of colleagues and friends with great results. But wait, now I also start going 35mm “full frame” or rather “small format” if you like, but with film, does that count as well?! I want to step up my game with a 50 years old camera model that will force me to nail the basics by being all manual and simple.

Very nice. The presentation was def a factor. Certainly made me look for traits associated with each camera mentioned. But as I said, it’s pretty much impossible to tell really.

Also - “shite” is such a more powerful word than “shit”. I commend its usage 😂

Great wisdom David. I’m in a photo show featuring 8 of my images coming up in June. I just had the framing completed. It’s interesting that of the 8, one was shot with the Canon 5D MK iv (30 megapixels), three were shot using my Olympus E-M1 MK iii (20 megapixels) and four were shot with my Lumix GF1 (12 Megapixels).

The Prints are all cropped to a 4/3 aspect ratio at a size of 10” x 13”.

I doubt anyone will be able to determine which camera was used on any of the shots.

Despite some limitations, that old Lumix GF1 is a brilliant performer. I’ve sold off the Canon and my main camera is now the Olympus. In fact I’m about to buy an original EM1 as a backup camera. I’ve h had one in the past and I loved how it performed. I actually prefer its flip out screen.

I still use a d5600 after 5 years. It does have some annoyances, the viewfinder kinda sucks, there's no second card slot and it's cheap and plasticky but at the end of the day it delivers excellent images and it's still working even after being dropped, rained on, used in sub zero conditions, fog and more. I've tried a few high end full frame systems like the d850 and Z6 and they have some useful features but mostly they are just small conveniences, nothing that's going to make much difference to my photography and the image quality difference is negligible. I've decided to just stick with what I've got and use it until it breaks.
