As online surveillance often threatens the very idea of private browsing we have to take matters into our own hands and look for more private and secure options.
Some of us may turn to VPN as a secure option for staying anonymous on the wild-web. Whilst others may look to the Tor network for untraceable connections. But, what about pairing these two up? Is it the ultimate power-couple of the connection security world? Does the average Joe even need to consider using Tor over VPN?

What is Tor over VPN?
🧅 From Politicians to journalists, Tor over VPN is used by many, for various reasons. Tor over VPN or Onion over VPN is what it is called when you combine a VPN with the Tor network.

🧅 To start with the basics, a Virtual Private Network used alone can route your connections through an intermediary server, masking your REAL IP address, all the while encrypting the connection from your device to the server and back. This secures your internet, whilst protecting your data.

🧅 Then you have Tor, which in short, operates on a network that anyone is able to join. This system works by sending your traffic through a network of volunteer servers (at least 3 each time) adding layers of encryption at each point. Basically, when used in conjunction the idea of someone tracing back the connection to the original source is as likely as seeing pigs fly. 🐷 🛫

Is Tor over VPN safe?
🧅 So, when we talk about the safety level of Onion over VPN, we first have to talk about the security of these services separately. After all, nothing is fool-proof and certain vulnerabilities do exist - for instance, when choosing a VPN, it’s very important to check that the service is a no-logs VPN. This is especially important for your privacy as it not only hides your activity from everyone, it also hides it from the VPN provider itself!

🧅 Then, when it comes to the Tor network, there are ways for bad actors to track you through compromised servers. However, when used together, you have two entities to rely on, rather than one and the likelihood that both would be affected is very low, especially because of the several layers of encryption, that’s why some use them in conjunction.
Do you need Tor over VPN?
🧅 For some, solely relying on a VPN or just Tor might not be enough, especially people working with sensitive data or people living in countries with strict censorship.

Pros:
✅ Kill switch remains
✅ Access to ISPs that usually block Tor

Cons:
❎ Slower speed times
❎ Connection is sometimes cut

Tor over vpn has it's pros and cons but I will make this clear about the cons. The VPN provider will see everything you are doing on TOR. However, if you use VPN over Tor...your VPN won't have your original IP address. The only problem with that is...your ISP will know you are connecting to TOR but won't see what your doing. Here is a question for everyone to figure out. What is your threat model 🤔 😏

I don't get it. Just use bridges. Why are you even bothering slowing down Tor further with a VPN? And if your VPN is using TCP, that's doubly stupid. TCP-over-TCP is terribly, proveably, non-performant.

The whole purpose of anonymity get compromised when using either tor over vpn or vpn over tor you are leaving a unique digital finger print, the whole purpose of tor is make you look like everyone else if you use things like vpn or even customise your tor browser you are standing out with such stupidity don't be a fool to use tor with vpn instead use a virtual operating system like whonix or a quick bootable USB based OS like tails which can be used when you are not using your own computer don't fall into lies of VPN or Sponsored youtubers when they say that they themselves promote using tor with VPN, you can make yourself anonymous for free but it's a work of hassle which you have to go through.
