The Rivian R1S Destroys The Tesla Model X (I Own Both)

I waited three years for my Rivian…So here are my initial thoughts on the car! I go over my initial thoughts about the SUV and dropped it off at my friend Houston’s Royalty Exoctic’s so he could wrap it for me!

And no I am not a Rivian or Tesla investor. I wish Rivian paid me for the video but they didn’t. I am grateful I got the car before year end though for Sec 179 write off.

That being said I am looking at buying Tesla stock right now with it being down so much.

I own a '22 Model X LR and a new '23 Rivian R1S. The X is more of a sports crossover, while the Rivian is a serious off-road truck. It's a bit quicker 0-60 than the Tesla, but the R1S is not as planted or nimble. Comparing driver aids... I am not a fan of Driver-plus. You can't use it on anything other than mapped highways, so is not nearly as useful as Enhanced Autopilot. I like the style of both in different ways. The Model X interior is like the Eero Saarinen TWA Hotel at JFK airport. The Rivian interior is like a retro futuristic Grand Wagoner. They each have their own style of bells and whistles. As for off roading, the Tesla isn't suited for anything more challenging than a dirt road with some small branches. The Rivian can raise itself high, and handle some serious Wrangler-style off-roading.

Ive had my R1S for 2 weeks and IT. Our neigjborhood just got hit by a devestating hailstorm. Every car NOT in a garage was a total loss. Cars being towed out of the neighborhood daily. Luckily I left 20 min before the hail hit and returned an hour later. I can tell you the Rivian handles extremely well driving on a foot of hail. Yes 12 inches of golf ball sized hail!

This is the car company that I hope survives. Unlike xPeng (and a bunch of other EV makers) that are only after the investor cash and i dont really feel they want to make a high quality car for the consumer, rivian actually delivers a true high quality product

Really like the R1S, so it's nice to hear from someone who's owned a Model X and can compare the two. Personally, the R1S just looks like it's got better quality and versatility than the Tesla, and I even think it looks better (though the Model X does look nice). I hope your buddy Houston was joking about that $10K price tag for the PPF and tinting. Shouldn't cost anywhere near that much, but I definitely liked the look afterward. Amazing how much different it looked with the matte finish. Added a really custom, slick look to an already great looking EV.

The panoramic sunroof is actually why I didn't Pre Order a couple years ago. Sure you can tint it but it's not the same as having a retractable cover. The rest of the car looks amazing though

I have both as well You'll like the Tesla much better for longer runs due to the supercharging. The phone chargers on the Rivian are terrible and doesn't have autopilot yet. Other than that they are hard to compare as they are both nice.

Beautiful I seriously believe when Toyota 4Runner owners see this thing they’ll be very interested!
As for the roof if you’ve ever owned an Audi with their panoramic roof I always want that in an SUV.

It’s my understanding that the wristband was only available with the launch edition and can’t be purchased separately. Personally I’d love to have one, especially when hiking and whatnot, just not having to carry the key with me would be awesome

IF you have a at home charger yes. If you have a good network around you...yes. If you live in a tesla charger only area - this is a moot point.

I’d buy one today but the 3rd party charging networks are just trash. If Tesla opened up their superchargers to other OEMs in the US, I’d buy a Rivian immediately.

Would love to hear a review a year down the road. I like to break my cars in before I decide whether to keep it or not. I remember not liking how my Tesla rode stiff in the beginning but after awhile it got smoother. Also what is the charge time for a full charge and at what voltage? What is the aprox milage on a full charge?

Really good review. I’m certainly starting to take notice of the Rivian R1S. Question for you: Can you fit a standard LP gas 20# cylinder (for a gas grill) upright in the front trunk?

still less range than a model x without the access to the supercharging networks. the supercharging networks and more range is one of teslas best features. im sure one day every ev will have more of a supercharging network and added range.

Unlock the speaker in the vehicle settings. Took me a while to learn that.
