My mom once lost her wedding ring swimming in the ocean. A friend of ours grabbed his goggles and snorkel and said "I'll go find it". We all laughed and said "no way". 15mins later he comes back with her ring. He said sunlight hit the ring in just the right way and his eye caught the reflection. Amazing!

I stand with fellow metal-detectorists when I say "engrave or otherwise personalize your valuables in a way they can be positively identified."
I started my hobby in 1994 by finding a class ring that I could return to the owner. Don't get me wrong, I WANT to find valuables that I can claim as my own, and often do (mostly coins) but when I can identify the owner of jewelry and return it, it satisfies me more than the value of the item I've found.

To the people saying they should have done more, they asked the guy nicely to help them retrieve the ring, probably took 5min or so since they knew the area. They thanked him after that and thats where it ends. The guy had a metal detector for a reason, FIND THINGS IN THE SAND, which he did by helping the girls. In your life, do you ask to get paid for every time you help ? Sometimes just doing a good deed and not waiting for a reward other than some appreciation is fine.
