Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphony No 7 In A Major - 2nd Movement - Allegretto

The Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, is a symphony in four movements composed by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1811 and 1812, while improving his health in the Bohemian spa town of Teplitz. The work is dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries.

The second movement in A minor has a tempo marking of Allegretto ("a little lively"), making it slow only in comparison to the other three movements. This movement was encored at the premiere and has remained popular since. Its reliance on the string section makes it a good example of Beethoven's advances in orchestral writing for strings, building on the experimental innovations of Haydn.

My enemies sinking into the abysmal depth of hell while simultaneously elation at the perfection of the metaphysical process. No resentment. No regret. Only what it is.

This piece just takes me to a whole nother dimension. It's perfect. Moonlight Sonata used to do that when I played it but this is even better.

I heard this on the 2023 Netflix series “ The fall of the house of Usher” . I think it was the first episode, towards the end. Ive been intrigued by it ever since. I don’t usually listen to classical music and by the sound of this I have been depriving myself. Although I have always loved Beethoven’s 6th ( The Pastoral) symphony and Clair D Lune by Debussy, I havent really explored it. I guess I better get going, Ive lost 64 years already.

I came to this music through movies! They were: The Black Cat (1934) Zardoz and The King's Speech. I knew it first from The Black Cat, where Boris Karloff is offscreen, launching into a monologue about the nature of death. I saw that movie as a child and it really affected me. It also made me a lifelong fan of this music (and the other classical pieces the same movie used as its soundtrack.) And I owe all that to Philadelphia's legendary horror host: Dr. Shock! Thank you!

Who is the conductor, and which symphony?
For me, the gold standard is Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. I can hear his/their version of the 2nd movement in my head. Tremendously moving.
