How to Read and Understand the Whole Bible

The first thing you should do to start reading and understanding the Bible well is get a Catholic Bible you know you will be inspired to read if you don’t have one already.

For beginners, start with the Gospels. Take fifteen to thirty minutes to read over a paragraph or a chapter. Lectio divina, or praying with Scripture, is a great way to make the most of this time. Read over the passage a few times. Ask God to speak to you through it. Use your imagination and put yourself in the scene and ask God to direct your thoughts.

Once you’ve read through the Gospels, try reading the whole Bible in a year. Or if you want to just read the story, follow The Great Adventure Bible Timeline which gives a reading plan for the fourteen narrative books of Scripture. Jeff Cavins’ Bible Timeline shows the cohesive story that ties together all of Scripture and highlights its main themes and covenants so you can get the big picture.

Because Scripture is the living Word of God, it can hit you differently depending on when in your life you read it:

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

Jackie and Bobby also encourage you to memorize Scripture, so you can offer its words to others who need to hear them, and so you can recall them in moments of temptation.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly … ” (Colossians 3:16)

Most importantly, don’t let the thought of reading Scripture become daunting. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Remember what inspired St. Augustine to conversion: a few words he heard spoken by a child in a neighboring house, “tolle et lege” (pick up and read).

Hi Bobby and Jackie, I recently read the entire New Testament from first to last page. I am now in the Old Testament and now in Leviticus. The Bible is so fascinating and I have learned so much. Paul is one fascinating person and his letters. I am not a Catholic, But I love Jesus Christ and I am still struggling with some things in my life and my health. I just found this channel and have joined it. I'm not perfect and I'm still learning and growing.

What's helped me stay consistent is doing a daily in-depth study to the daily readings of the mass! Since you don't have to choose which scriptures you'll be reading that day, it's much easier to make it a routine!

I recently got the first volume of Bishop Barron’s Word on Fire Bible, which covers the Gospels, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking to make Scripture reading a part of their daily routine. It is beautifully made, with commentary from various saints, theologians, and Bishop Barron himself, in addition to artwork from Michelangelo, da Vinci, Van Gogh, and many others, that all serve to bring readers to a deeper understanding of the Scripture passages.

I always struggled reading the Bible because I thought I had to fully understand everything in a book before I moved on to the next. But your notion of it being a "living" word that always reveals something new helps quell that anxiety. Thank you!

I love my Great Adventure Bible. The RSV is a very readable and accurate translation and Jeff Cavin's additions to the Bible (charts, articles, reading plan, etc.) all make reading the Bible so much more enjoyable. It is like a tour guide through the book.

Setting aside a specific time and place. It has to be a part of my routine. If I can make the commitment to leave at 7:45 for work I can make to commitment to read and reflect on God's word from 6:30 to 7:00.

The first time I read the Bible, I just read it straight through -- everything -- and I'll admit that I found it downright weird at times, but I trusted in God that whatever I found strange was right and good and made sense. The second time I read it, what I saw was God's sweetness, patience, love, and strong desire to have His people under his wing. Now I just read it over and over, and it grows more and more wonderful. Although I read straight through, and that worked for me, to a new reader, I would recommend reading from John to the end, then read the entire NT, then read the OT+NT. Grace and peace to you all through Jesus Christ. <3

I was once told that in the absence of a plan I could just read one Psalm a day and it has been the biggest blessing. I grew up Baptist and Bible study was paramount growing up. Since I started reading the Psalms I feel like I have come home. Scripture is the balm to my soul in this time of trial!!!

I started reading the bible, using Ascension 's, which my sister gifted.. I started with the gospels, as was suggested by an internet search by a Catholic site. It took me a little over a year, reading every day. I'd read any where from 15 to 30 minutes. Now I've started over, and feel empty if I don't read every day. I find much comfort and peace while reading. I remember thinking why didn't I read this wonderful and blessed word while I was young. It is the best BOOK I've ever read! 💜

Hi from Argentina! 🇦🇷 God’s Word for us touches always my soul never ceasing to surprise me! A few years ago I started all nights asking the Holy Spirit for his Word opening random the Bible writing down those phrases that moved me deeply and now I can’t fall asleep if I don’t read even just a verse. Later I found out it that what I was doing was a way of contemplation as you Jackie say! A beautiful and silent love talk with our Lord! This way of prayer has helped me to grow in knowledge of His Word (although needing to learn much more) and attending Holy Mass where if I’m not wrong we read the hole Bible in three years! Blessings and fraternal love from Argentina! Sorry for my English 🙈

It really helped me to determine how much time I was going to take daily for reading. I would take that time every day no matter what. I started from the gospels throughout the NT and the I started the OT from Genesis in estrict order. I also combine my reading time with the cathecism, with helps a lot im understanding what you read and practically apply it to you own life.

We have a Father in our community who started teaching us the Bible in depth. It really blows our mind when we understand the underlying meanings and the connections between the Old and the New Testament.
It helped me get a lot more stronger in faith.
I'm really grateful to Fr. Daniel Poovannathil. May God bless him abundantly.

Lay communities helped me a lot (i was a leader in my previous parish) we meet every week for 2 hours and we read and discuss the bible passages at least 2 times per month, this really helps us read, engage in a conversation and we have a priest to ask him questions in every meeting, these communities helps a lot, you do not have to be a master, also you can feel the presence of Jesus in the group
