HassIO Zwave setup for beginners

Raspberry pi zwave home automation! This video will explain what that means from epxlaining what Zwave and Zigbee are, explaining some of the devices you can automate using these technologies, a bit about the difference between Zwave and Zigbee, and then how to set it up in HassIO. I include some troubleshooting tips as well since..well...I hit some issues when going through the steps a second time myself :)

I tried to keep it short, but also I want my videos to be informative so I stuffed alot into about 13 minutes or so. If you have any questions please ask them below.

Please note there is a TON to each of these protocols, and this isn't meant to be an in depth dive. However, this should help get you off the ground and pairing devices, and to understand things like how mesh networks benefit you.

Great tutorial, thank you! I'm now just making the switch from HASSBIAN which was working perfectly, but is no longer supported. I couldn't believe how much different it is to HASS.IO. Your video made it that much smoother for me, thank you!

Good video! Thanks for the tip on how to find out USB hardware info. I was not aware of that!
Thumbs up and subscribed!

great video - I'd love you to add another to your suite.... hassio on main system, and a second raspi with the usb stick. Have the second raspberry not have hassio on it, but raspbian (or other unix), and just the usb stick. Then connect it to the main hassio system through mqtt. That is what I want to do, as I have a network connected from my office to main house (separate buildings, same lan) with devices in both. Thoughts? Could you do this?

Another great video! Three questions 1)do you still like the Nortek USB dongle? I was considering the Aeotec Z-stick, but it's z-wave only. But, I do have Hue lights. I was thinking I'd just continue to control them with the Hue Bridge?? 2)do you feel like the Pi3 still does a good job for you? 3)I'm replacing a Wink hub, so it sounds like I should go in and remove all the z-wave devices from it prior to setting them up in HASS?? Thanks again for your good work. ~Frank

Great video, but I have one question. How do I set my Sengled bulbs into pairing mode? The bulbs I have require a Hub, which I have, but don't seem to be discovered by the Raspberry Pi. The Zigbee stick is set up and connected, so I'm unsure what to do now.

You said "hit the button" and something popped up in the corner (sorry I am brand spanking new). What was that, where is it, how did it pop up?

Great video! very helpful. I am having a wierd problem where the zwave works fine but zigbee does not seem to be working at all. Anyone encounter this? I have set it up verbatim as what is shown in this video.

Thanks for the video... I'm still coming up short somewhere. I have all of it setup properly, I can add nodes, remove, etc. But every time I add a new node, it makes it through- seemingly just fine- but it doesn't have any entities attached to it. I'm trying to add in a Samsung Smartthings plug, new out of box. It completes the pairing, says "Node:# Complete" but there aren't any entities listed below it nor new ones listed. Help??

Great tutorial, thanks. I am using the same device, but I am on a Supervised Docker Install. I have the Zigbee portion working fine. But I cannot for the life of me get any of my z wave devices to pair. I have three Inovelli NZW30 switches and a GE (Jasco) switch exactly like yours. I am inclined to think because of my installation that I need to do something else to get the z wave to work, but I have not found anything on the internet to tell me what that might be. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi,
Thanks for the video. Is great.
I have Xiaomi and Shelly devices. Not working together.

I want to buy the Raspeberry Pi 4, install Hassio and HA.
Shelly devices are easy to put in HA with MQTT.
But can you tell me if the Xiaomi devices that are Zigbee can be added also, like you told in your video?
Then I can work with all of them together.

I'm trying to add a Aeotec Smart Switch 6. I've done a reset on the switch as per the manual (Hold action button down for 20 seconds). I tried to connect using your method, but couldn't get anything to appear, so I tried using the method in the Aeotec manual which was to unplug the USB Z-Wave stick from my Raspberry Pi, press the action button on the USB stick and then the action button on the switch. It seemed to pair. I then plugged the USB stick into the Raspberry Pi and did a reboot.

Under Configuration, it appears as Unknown Node 3 (Node:3 probe) and when I look at the last 10 lines, the 3rd last line reads: "Error, Node003, ERROR: Dropping command because node is presumed dead"

Am I doing something wrong? Also, if I do need to remove it, what's the best way?

Thanks

ok, I just got the HUSBZB-1 USB Hub from Amazon today. I have connected 4 ceiling lights so far. The issue I'm having is how do I get amazon to see them so that I can use the voice assistant?

Good step by step instruction. Just one suggestion: they changed Configurator to File Editor. If you can update that it would help noobs like me!

Nice useful (later on) video but I was hoping to see how to install the Nortek, not the lights and stuff.
