Guys I just found this website that has some great info about PAs and NPs. Well worth the watch. They just do a really great job at teasing out the differences and similarities of the two professions.

The first video discusses the top ten things he wish he could tell all NPs to help them better understand PAs.

The second video discusses the 10 things NPs wished PAs knew about them.

ENJOY!!!

Thank you so much for this great information. I just graduated undergrad and PA has been my career goal since my sophomore year. I have gotten many people who ask me why I don't just go to medical school. Just like you having a family and having that good work life balance is very important to me and the PA route allows for that.

Thanks for info Adanna! I was personally pursuing the PA route early in my undergrad however that changed and now I am in Med school. While I was in school these were the pros and cons of both professions and why I ultimately decided MED.

PA: pros
-Shorter amount of schooling (Since I plan to become a very involved mother in the next few years, not a mom yet though)

-Flexibilty of specialty (I'm still in limbo over family med, obgyn, and ER). I know PA gives this flexibility

-I worked as a scribe in ED and PA's generally seemed happier and more youthful. The PA's who were longer in the game were just as educated as the MD's.

-Con: getting into PA school has become more competitive now than MD school.
-No program yet for PA to purse doctorates in their field or a PA to MD bridge program (ex: NP to DNP)

MD: pros
- Full Autonomy

- Dr. "xyz"

- I wasn't sure how working as a PA is around the world but if i wanted to practice back in my home country and it wouldn't be an issue as an MD

- Better salary depending on specialty

-Con: in school forever! AND more debt outta school.

Are you a Christian? Your joy and personality radiate positivity and light and I feel very close to you through this presentation!! We relate in so many ways and I feel that if we share the same faith, that could be the main reason why!

Hey Adanna! New sub here :) So I've been stressing out on which route to take, I did a lot of research on MD but the length of school and rotation seems draining especially since my ultimate dream is having a family. And I want to be part of my kids growing up too! I love your energy! My first plan was PA but I thought "why not just work on getting into med school?" But after watching a couple of your videos, I'm almost certain PA is my calling! I'm here to support and get insight while on my journey to get into a PA program!

Awesome on your test! Yes, there are two different models "medical" and "nursing." The nursing model is more patient focus surrounded by several there is a diagnosis component to the nursing model...I didn't know if you stated this or not! Good luck with your program

Just a FYI ... DNP student here. We use both the medical model and nursing model as NPs. Which means we focus on both the pathophysiology and the patient at the same time. It is a more comprehensive approach. Often times by taking into account all aspects of the patient's history, you undercover the initial cause of the disease process and can address the cause as well as treat the disease. It requires a very analytical approach that includes differential diagnosis.

Another good factor when I chose between pa vs np is that most np programs it is required that you have a BSN. Where pa school lets you have any degree you want you just need most of the pre reqs. So it’s really great for students that have been in healthcare that want to advance. Like me I’ve been a EMT since I was 16 and just thoroughly enjoyed working towards a ems bs degree.

To be fair, NP's do alot more than 'provide care and comfort' to a pt! They also treat the pt ftom a pathophysiological standpoint; can asses, diagnose, even prescribe much the same as a PA. Nonetheless you're right: PA is definitely more in line with a stricter medical model of MD's. Much success on ur journey .. and beautiful family!!
