How to Become a Doctor vs PA vs NP #SHORTS

To become a doctor, you must complete four years of college, four years of medical school, and three to seven years of residency. Depending on the specialty, you may be required to complete one or more years of fellowship as well.

To become a physician assistant, you must complete four years of college followed by two and a half years of physician assistant school. After that, there’s no residency, and you’re free to start practicing as a PA immediately.

To become a nurse practitioner, there are two pathways:

The traditional pathway involves earning your bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing and passing the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX, to earn your RN license.

After that, you must attend a master’s or doctorate program which can last anywhere from two to five years. Similar to PAs, NPs are not required to complete any form of residency.

The direct entry pathway is for those who earned a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field. These are three to five-year programs where you will take both the NCLEX to earn your RN and complete a master’s or doctorate program to become an NP.

Vanderbilt school of nursing has an alternate path program to become a nurse practitioner for people with bachelors degree that is 2 years. It is 1 year for people with BSN.

@MedSchoolInsiders The sad thing about me is I really do want to be a doctor but I don't feel confident that I'll succeed. I mean this might still be a bit early because I am still in freshman year of highschool, but my dream is to become a doctor. It's tough, I'm just worried because if I don't make medical school that would be disappointing. I'm nervous. May anyone give me some advice if I should follow my dreams or if I should take another field. My main issue is that I am not good at memorizing things. I need help building that skill. That will improve my confidence more.

Can someone point me to the direct entry pathway program to go direct to NP? I already have a bachelors degree in a unrelated field. Thank you.

The nomenclature used here is incorrect. The appropriate professional title is “physician”, not “doctor”. PhDs are doctors. Dentists are doctors. So are podiatrists, NDs, veterinarians, etc….

“Doctor” describes the highest level of academic degree/education earned. There are students who graduate medical school with a MD/DO degree and never go on to practice medicine. And while they may possess an MD/DO degree, they are not physicians (especially if they are not licensed as one). “Physician” is just one of many professions within the greater medical community.

A physician is not licensed as a “doctor”, nor are they permitted to practice medicine as a “doctor”. They are licensed to practice medicine as a physician.

Don’t you need like 2, 000 hours of clinical experience to become a PA?
