Honestly, a must-do for these laptops is to open them up and repaste them with a high-quality thermal paste. You can also upgrade the thermal pads or use TG-PP10 for any chiplets for a little extra performance. Honeywell PTM7950 is also an option.
The stock application of paste oftentimes sucks, so this should help with idle temps, fan ramping, and frequency drops at peak.

I have an XPS 15 i7 and the overheating on this thing is ridiculous. I am typing on it right now and the fans audible just from watching this video and my finger tips are warm from the heat generated by the laptop. The promise of the long battery life is joke really, because the constant overheating kills it. I can get maybe 3-4 hours out of it assuming I'm not editing, then it's more like... 2? I never edit without it plugged in as a result. The actual editing performance is good, screen colour accuracy is great and the portability factor has been great as I've been travelling - although the webcam is terrible so not so good for zoom calls. The SD slot is super useful, glad for the headphone jack. If this laptop could figure out the heating issue and consequently the battery problem, this laptop would be a fantastic buy

I still have no idea why they didn't add a vapor chamber and improve the thermals after THREE YEARS smh

They also need to upgrade the audio quality too. The Macbook 16 should be their internal benchmark.

Love the XPS but would like Dell to make an XPS 15 “Pro” version. Make it a tad thicker, give it proper cooling (vapor chamber?) and maybe some legacy ports like USB-A and HDMI. I think it would be extremely successful!

After 3 years i can say that thing is amazing! works like the first day.

Actually I WAS seriously considering the XPS 15! I was going back and forth between it and the HP Z-Book Fury 16. I think you just made up my mind for me. Thanks!

Its not for gamers or people using office apps its for people using cad and video editing.

Ya this review has basically confirmed my decision to skip the XPS ... again! I've got the 9500 and have found no reason to upgrade to the 9530, beside the power their cooling solution makes useless to run. Such a shame, for an otherwise sexy-looking machine. What other laptop would you suggest? Currently considering the Thinkpad Z16 Gen 1.

UPDATE: So I bit the bullet and got the 9530! Nothing else compared FOR A MACHINE CORPORATE WAS WILLING TO SUBSIDIZE. (Sorry for the caps but I know other devices compare.) In any case, I was really impressed with mine. This thing is a beast. I have the same specs as The Everyday Dad, although I did upgrade the DDR5 and SSD. All my bad experiences with Dell (so far! ... fingers crossed) went out the window after setting it up. I even like the FHD, although at this price it should include the OLED by default. I mean come on, it costs exactly as much in CAD as my 16" M1 Pro, which is mini LED (!) and has much better battery life, energy effeciency, and speakers! By the way, Everyday Dad, it's not just your unit whose hinge creaks! LOL It may be that the hinge is so tight to avoid the hinge problem of prior iterations? The lid of my 9500, for instance, used to open when I carried it like a book. Friggen Dell!

i have actually really been interested in the i9 processor model. I'm not a gamer but having the better processor will definitely be helpful for school. I have to open many SPSS files so while not graphic intensive, it does use lots of power and want it to be snappier and it doesn't seem like the thermal problems should be that bad at least for me as a student. Although the i7 sounds good too

In the UK, I was looking to get the latest XPS - but I’d only want a UHD screen. Why has Dell released it without having the UHD screen option yet? Daft.

I repasted just the cpu with liquid metal and it resolved those issue he was talking about. Battery life has improved. The fans do not ramp unless I'm hitting the cpu or gpu with a heavy load. Biggest difference was the cpu was able to substain a high clock speed. I don't remember the exact score but the thermal paste I throttled to 3.8-3.9 Ghz. Liquid metal it was at 4.2-4.3 Ghz. Overall with liquid metal it's made it a solid laptop for my needs.

You can't game on this the frame spikes from throttling are insane. Especially since there is a insulation layer on the motherboard leading to more throttling.

the HP envy 16 is so good! it has a vapor chamber cooling with very similar specs and huge vents in the bottom. and with the same H series processor.

If you undervolt and apply new thermal paste I think it might help the thermals

The price is way too high. The hubris of Windows laptop makers is pushing me to consider the upcoming 15-inch Macbook Air, and I've been a lifelong Windows user.

I have an XPS 15 9500 and i was considering upgrading to this 2023 model, but since the GPU its power limited, i dont see a point to upgrade. I was even considering changing to Razer

Creeky hinge fix: expose the metal hinge and put a little olive oil on it. Worked a dream for me.

Looks like the chassis is completely unchanged from the one I bought in 2016. Word of caution - after about 3 years of usage, my laptop developed a hinge problem which caused the keyboard cover to lift at the back when opening. It also struggled to stay cool when gaming (mine was an i7) and the edges really start to dig in to your wrists when typing for any significant length of time. I'd recommend this laptop for casual use only.
