I love that you call them out on their self serving practices

As a Progressive insurance agent/broker myself, not a single customer of mine has ever saved money using these devices. It’s ALWAYS a rate increase, and the company’s agent training still encourages us to push this garbage to customers.

I know someone who had the system. He had to slam on the brakes to avoid someone running a stop sign -- and a week later got a letter telling him that "excessively hard braking" had been detected, which was a sign of dangerous driving, so his rate nearly doubled. Because he avoided getting into an accident by doing the right thing. NEVER forget that insurance is a for-profit industry, and they are very, very good at it.

When I was with Progressive, my wife and I used the device. We are both incredibly safe drivers; the kind of people who both literally have "Safe Driver" on our driver's licenses.

It lowered our rates by like $80 every SIX months. Not PER month, every SIX months.

Then, after several months after we had removed the devices, someone REAR ENDED me. The people who hit me had someone come out of a random building nearby -- in the middle of the night -- and tell the cop who arrived that I had been backing up. We were at a stop sign.

The cop did not find anyone at fault. He said "your insurance companies are going to need to fight it out".

We both had Progressive. They took the word of the witness and refused to pay EITHER of us.

Since the hit was minor, I didn't sue (it cost me $200 to repair the bumper cover). I did drop them, though, after having them for almost 20 years.

When they asked me why I was dropping them, I literally laughed at the agent and told her to read my case history. She said "I guess there is nothing I can do to keep you?" I told her to fire her claims adjusters, fix my recent case, and pay me out for damages. She said she couldn't do that. I said "Then no, there's nothing you can do."

I've been on USAA ever since. I also have dashcams in both of my cars now.

State Farm offered that to me, since I really don't drive a lot because I work from home. This video are reasons why I turned it down.

My brother had one. It fundamentally changed the way he drove. He had to stop taking late shifts because the snapshot reported his driving time. He had to start decelerating while still on the highway because it didn't like how fast he would brake getting off the highway if there was traffic in the offramp. And he was only supposed to have it for a month but they made him keep it in for three months to "gather more data" before he just said screw it and found a different insurance provider.

Same reason why HR exists. It's not for you.

When a company says that you *could possibly* have your rates lowered, trust that they probably only lower rates for about 1% of their drivers, if even.

If you drive slower than the speed limit, they'll use *that* as an excuse to not pay out. *Everything* is an excuse for an insurance company

I love when you call out companies on their bullshit. Glad I subscribed to this channel.

My Dad did it for one term. They basically encourage you to run red lights because they count "hard braking" against you too. I always decline it.

You also won't earn the discount if you drive between 9pm and 5am, which was a fun fact I learned when I looked at it while working overnights. XD

Also another thing with some of these devices is that some still have to plug into the OBD port which is not what that port is designed for and could potentially damage the vehicle

My family calls me paranoid for not byuing in to that kind of thing. Thank you for putting this out there. Also, any digital info can probably be manipulated too....
Unless there is a true bit by bit copy made prior to lawsuit, I wouldnt trust the data as proof.

My mother insisted I get one a couple of years ago since she was paying the insurance on my car, it was not only was impossible to appease (it would give the "breaking too hard" penalty beep after the GENTLEST of low speed stops) and after a couple of days it nearly fried the electrical systems on every sensor in the car triggering every single warning light we pulled it out and sent it back after maybe a week absolutely hated that thing.

I got the Progressive Snapshot many years ago. It did indeed lower my rates next year, but the year after that, they raised my rates even higher than they were to begin with!

Thats exactly what they tried to do to me when i got rear-ended by an ambulance. The data showed i hit my brakes suddenly. It didnt show what my dashcam showed, which was a cop jumping in front of my car in an attempt to stop me to allow the ambulance to pass me on a narrow single lane road that runs right up against a river. Dashcam saves you more money than snapshot ever could.

If it didn't result in more money for the insurers they wouldn't be offering it.

Cars come equipped with modems now to monitor you… gps, data from your devices (phones) you connect to “infotainment systems”.. (which may include texts and other things), along with regular car telemetry…

But the ODB reader “snapshot “ stuff may damage your car too.

My mum's friends son had his insurance go up because someone hit his parked car. They said "a no fault claim means you're more likely to have a fault later"... it's shady and that was around 2010 without all this data
