I am an Independent Insurance agent and Progressive is one of the companies I represent. This is a very accurate general explaination of Snapshot. I think most of the telematic programs make drivers more self aware of being a "smooth" driver, which increases traffic safety for all.

I just signed up for this. I was paying $140/month for my vehicle with another company. My wife bought a new car and the policy shot up to $425/month. I swapped to progressive with snapshot and the policy starts at just $170/month for both vehicles. The one that that worries me is the “late night driving.” I load the package cars that go out for delivery at UPS. Most of the year we start around 4:30AM so I’m leaving for work around 4AM. However, in November and December we generally start around 3:30AM so I’ll be leaving for work around 3AM, potentially checking that late night driving flag 5 or 6 days a week.

This snapshot fails, in so many ways, to be ANY indicator of a safe driver. The idiot that thought this up clearly had something else in mind because it wasn't designed for safety. Take hard braking for example. In the real world driving near LA can be a nightmare in itself. And drivers there tend to be a bit more offensive than usual, crossing three lanes and cutting you off just to jockey for a better position - causing you to brake just to avoid the collision. Who in their right mind would consider that a ding when braking hard to avoid the accident was both necessary and the only option. Yet this plays out hundreds if not thousands of times a minute on California highways. Or the early morning riser who, like me, gets up at 3:30am with five minutes in the car to my first stop for coffee. Then gets a second ding for continuing down the road to work. I have a sneaking feeling this is all for nothing and progressive will simply use the false dings to raise my rate anyway - all the while having gotten me to comply just so they could carry out whatever REAL reason they had for having this program.
