Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

A Vulcan revolutionary, Sybok is on a quest for ultimate knowledge which can only be provided by the creator of all things, his god on a planet that Sybok refers to as Sha Ka Ree located at the centre of the galaxy. As a contrarian it should come as no surprise that Sybok does not conduct himself like any other Vulcan, having maintained the belief that the path to ultimate discovery can only be travelled if you embrace your emotions; he's also inclined to use a whammy on those that he meets to obtain their cooperation. To advance his agenda, Sybok and his band of followers from planet Nimbus III successfully take control of the Enterprise and have it ferry them to the Great Barrier at the centre of the galaxy where Sybok believes Sha Ka Ree is located. Despite most of the crew having turned, Captain Kirk, Mister Spock and Doctor McCoy do all that they can to resist the ships advance towards the Great Barrier.

So "god" finally presents himself however it doesn't take long for the Almighty to slip up and start making unreasonable requests of his subjects and of course lose his temper when exposed to the simplest of questions.

That "excuse me" moment has tremendous meme potential

3:00 I liked how this showed Sybok's compassion, even for Kirk, who had been opposing him from the start. Sybok still considered Kirk a friend. Goes to show that he wasn't bad, just misguided.

While Kirks question is a scene maker...its Spocks backing him up with zero hesitation thats my favorite part of this scene

2:05 "Excuse. Me. But... What does... GOD... need with a... Starship?"

"Now...give me what I want." A truly terrifying thing for a god-like individual to say to you. A childish god demanding something is scary.

Spock sees Kirk get blasted for asking a question, then proceeds to ask the same question.

In the next scene, Spock pulls the entity's disguise off and it turns out to be Old Man Withers, the caretaker, who tells them "I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling Starfleet kids."

1:57 Love how Spock and Kirk exchange looks as if to say _"Hold tf up."_

While I dislike the execution of The Final Frontier, I come to appreciate the underlying message and concept more with time.

Never trust an almighty deity that fears a simple question.

Ok, but I still wasn't told what god needed with a starship.

I just realized... there are parts of the score here that sound remarkably like parts of the score of Star Trek: Nemesis

I really like how the music and "God's" demeanor reels you in, how when he reveals himself there is a biblical quality to the music and atmosphere. It makes you believe the crew found God. And then he asks about the ship, and you're like "wait, why he needs a starship?". Then Kirk is like "excuse me☝", and you start thinking "He is not he?", and then he asks "what does god needs with a starship?" and you go "HE IS

I know it's just a movie, but Kirk's apprehension. Such an impact on my personal life, to this day.

Love this scene, and thanks for posting it. I love that Kirk is immediately skeptical since he spent five years exploring the void and practically every other episode of TOS had him locking horns with a being with god-like powers. Same with the glance from Spock. It feels like a return to classic form for the film series, and this film is criminally underrated. Kirk uses his instincts and experiences and is proven right. I feel for Sybok, though.

Bones had a strong presence in this film...

I respect Kirk and Spock for being bold enough to ask the question, but I ADMIRE Bones for straight up doubting "God" blatantly to his face after watching two of his friends get lazered.

Out of a number of the crew, Bones seemed the most eager to see God, and it must have taken a lot to break him into..."yes, I doubt YOU".

Turns out this entity was of the Q continuum, imprisoned for having started the Civil War in the Q Continuum. I saw this movie when it came out and never knew what this being was until about 3 years ago.
