Weird Weapon of Ukraine War

Putin couldn’t be more wrong to assume the war in Ukraine would end quickly. As the war is now a year old, soldiers are running low on weapons and ammunition. Because of this, both armies have needed to improvise, which has seen the use of some weird weapons. The return of a World War I-era weapon – the Pulemyot Maxima 1910 machine gun, is one example.
Ukraine pulled this WWI weapon out of storage and it has been seen with some territorial defense units in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, attached to Soviet-era amphibious vehicles. Make no mistake, the Maxima was used by choice, not desperation, due to a specific advantage: a water cooling system. Modern machine guns often overheat, which means they can only be fired in short bursts and need barrel replacements. The Pulemyot Maxima, though, can be fired for longer, and soldiers need not worry about changing the barrel. Old, but effective.

Do you know of any other strange weapons used in the Ukraine war? Which one is your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

Just think for a moment that the M2 Browning is literally 90 years old. Some things are made so well that there is no need for replacement

„Modern machine guns often overheat“
*shows the single most overheat resistant machinegun ever made with quick exchange barrel that can be changed out in only a few seconds because it’s literally designed to fire for extended periods of time*

I mean it’s a machine gun. It lays down a lot of firepower and can kill. These abilities have no age limit

The Maxim and British Vickers machine gun also have slow rate of fire, which is useful for conserving ammunition while keeping heads down.

Saw some video of the Syrian Civil War and the rebels were using a truck mounted canon, and i mean 18th century canon.

If anyone thinks the Maxim wasn't well ahead of its time, you're wrong. In WW1 it was common for soldiers to piss in the water tank of the Maxim to keep it cooled and not have to waste water. Might not be as fast as some of the belt-feds that are in service today, but it can hold fire for much longer.

I've seen a fire extinguisher emptied and refilled with explosives, then using an RPG to fire it.

Nothing wrong with the Maxim, except it's heavy by modern standards, but that's because of its' water jacket and solid mounting. It's utterly reliable and for defending a fixed position it's hard to beat.

I don't blame em. That gun's so reliable it can be fired for days straight as long as it has water inside the barrel. Plus it fits the defensive role extremely well. A classic piece of weaponry it is.

Guns get rusty, shake off the rust and it is but an old soldier with no old knees and no old eyesight or weakened muscles.

I've heard of one specific water cooled machine gun (not sure if it was a maxim) that was being decommissioned. The British base where it was located decided to decommission it by firing over a million rounds of ammo out of it that were also scheduled to be decommissioned. The gun fired literally ALL of the ammo the base had, and was still perfectly serviceable at the end.

I could only hope for the days where we’ll finally bring back Naval bombardment in the form of battleships. A man can dream.

The Colt 1911 pistol is still in active service, not just pulled from retirement like this Maxim (not a Maxima) but actually in active service. Essentially, the mechanism of a gun hasn’t change in over a century. Put a round in a tube, strike the primer, the bullet goes down range - at the receiving end a bullet arriving from a 1910 gun is pretty much the same as a bullet arriving from a 1990s gun.
