This song demonstrates the ultimate power of music and how it impacts people in different ways.

Ultimately song writers love subsequent versions of their songs. Covers happen all the time. Imagine you found out Johnny Cash wanted some of your stuff and how it felt to listen to it. I sat in a cold sweat after listening to Cash's version for the first time!

A wonderful, thoughtful human being and a true musician. Trent’s quiet understanding of the human condition clearly informs his music and I’d be true that if you understand him, you also understand PEOPLE.

Beautiful song, made my 19yo self cry in concert 1994.

Thank you for sharing from your deep pain, it has now become a powerful medicine for all who face the unknowns at the end of life.

The song was so personal to Trent, yet spoke so personally to Johnny that not only did he want to cover it in his own way, but it let him express, in a musically different way, a huge part of himself despite the fact that it was Trent's song.

I didn't like Johnny's version when I first heard it, and I still prefer the original, but it definitely grew on me, especially in light of it encapsulating the final chapter of his life.

I can understand completely where he's coming from. I heard that at the beginning when they first asked him if Johnny Cash could cover it, he got really pissed. He was like, this is my song and you guys are just going to take it from me? I could understand I think it's good that he actually ended up becoming friends with him after that though. He actually gave him the song.

I prefer nins version. It’s more gritty and that’s why most people don’t like it but it’s better.

I don't like the disrespect for the original NIN version, it's a song from the heart and it's written by Reznor so even if you like Cashs version better, show some respect to the original!

Both versions are brilliant but so different, I don't consider Cash's a cover. His is changed at such a fundamental level that it is something new. Either way, I extend gratitude to both artists for their works of incredible art.

I know I’ll get 💩 for this, but I’ve never like Johnny Cash. He’s not singing to me…he’s just talking. Not my cup of tea, I guess. I love the original version of Hurt. Got to see tithe Downward Spiral tour in 94. It was my first concert, and it was amazing. I get people love the JC version, but nothing stands up to the original for me. Trent is just genius. Period. Full stop.

I didn't like that Johnny Cash changed the words from "I wear this crown of SHIT upon my liar's chair" to "I wear this crown of THORNS.."

It's like an idiot knodding head his while something complex which he has no remote understanding about is being explained.
