I love Cash and his version but not enough is said about how different the original is. Cash simplified that very first riff to sound more like a Johnny Cash song, which is great, as Cash's music is typically telling you a story, but it does lose complexity. Cash is telling you the story of a life, history; Trent is showing you the mindset of a life about to end. Cash's version is retrospective, as getting old and dying is; Trent's is in the moment, like suicide is. I think the fact Cash sings "I wear this crown of thorns" in place of "I wear this crown of shit" is very emblematic of how different the tone of the songs really is.

Nailed it. I love the NIN song and Johnny Cash turned it into what it meant for him at his life's end but the original version is something completely different. Trent Reznor was a genius writing it and Johnny Cash was a genius turning it into an endsong. Beautiful either way, this is 2 artists at their best.

Nine Inch Nails ended the concert on this song during the tour. Brough things down a notch before they let opened the stadium doors and let the rowdy crowd of fans outside. Just like you see on YouTube, Trent would Stan behind a curtain while illuminated. A projected series of images was project on the transparent curtain for the concert audience to see in perfect time to the music.
