"Gobble gobble" honestly sounds like a great alternate name for turkeys, honestly i don't mind if people actually call them like that.

in Turkish, the bird turkey is called "Hindi" because the Turkish thought they came from India.

in Portuguese we call them "peru", the same name of the country Peru.

I don't know how or why it happened, but the format of the country actually shares resemblance to a turkey if you rotate your map.

in Turkish, a turkey is called "Hindi" and India is called "Hindistan" the confusion 💀

Fun fact: it's because, back in the time, "Turkish" was sort of a way to say "foreign". That's the same reason why corn is also called "grano *turco*" in italian, although it's not from Turkey

Bit of interesting info, the name for the Turkey comes from the Guinea Fowl. Guinea Fowl were imported to the English by the Turks, and became known as Turkey-Cocks and Turkey-Hens. When settlers arrived in America, they called the native birds Turkeys because they looked very similar.

In spanish, "Turkey" is "pavo", which isn't weird by any means, but peacock (a bird originally from India) is called "pavo real", which translates to royal turkey.

It's because in England large game birds were imported from Turkey so the name turkey just became a name for large game birds.

In Spanish (at least in the area I’m from) we interpreted the turkey sound as “gordo, gordo, gordo” which means fat, fat, fat. 😂

they called the bird “turkey” because there’s a similar looking bird (the guinea fowl) in the country turkey. and since the english called the guinea fowls “turkey-hens” they called the new bird “turkey” out of familiarity :)
