This was the lesson that started my "nothing matters." mentality.

You don’t know how many times I’ve said “I before E except after C” in my head and then been like “wait what”

that’s why I go with “I before E except when It doesn’t”

You don't learn English, you memorize English.

In primary school, instead of learning this rule, we were tasked with listing the only words that actually followed the rule.

France: *slams down a thick rulebook*
English: *spits out cigarette* where we're going, we don't need no rulebook

My favorite exception to this role is the word society because society purposely doesn’t follow the rules it set for itself

I still remember my English teacher saying this before; "I before E except after C" yet we still live in a *weird* *society*

I don't even have this rule, but I did make up one rule that isn't even a rule. *The teacher doesn't dismiss us, the bell does.*

The actually ridiculous part is how many exceptions are stated in the whole rule: "I before E except after C, or when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh".

I used to give private English lessons and never mentioned this rule and anytime it was mentioned I just told my students to forget about it.

In primary school, we were told that rule but we were then given 'exceptions'

I remember learning “I before E except after C, disproved by SCIENCE”

There's a common misconception that the rule is as stated. It's not. The rule only applies when the pronunciation is "ee" (like receipt, niece, piece, etc). The rule is not meant to apply to words where the pronunciation is something else (like the "ay" sound in neighbour, or the "ear" sound in weird, etc). That said, there are still some exceptions like protein and caffeine.
