Well basically he just centralized power to local rich people instead of far off rich people

At one time, Henry VIII charged Protestants with Heresy and Catholics with Treason SIMULTANEOUSLY.

Funny thing is is that King Henry VIII was actually a great defender of the Catholic Church against the protestant reformation. It wasn’t until he didn’t get his way with the divorce and remarriage that he turned on the church. So sad

thank you for saying an annulment. too many people say divorce. Henry actually never divorced a single wife. The marriages were all annulled or considered invalid due to usually some kind of made up reasons.

Let’s not forget that Henry was anti-Luther up until the time he wanted that divorce. Henry was also awarded the title of defender of the faith for denouncing Luther.
Luther also had some choice words about Henry.

And killed those who opposed his rule. There are two saints commemorated in the Catholic Church for refusing to acknowledge that Henry was the head of the Church, and are now Martyrs because of it. St. Thomas More is one of them, and “A Man for All Seasons” is a wonderful telling of this story.

Don’t forget the 40, 000 people King Henry VIII killed during his reign of terror, exponentially more than the inquisition ever did.

One very important thing not mentioned is that Catherine was Henry's widowed sister-in-law. Henry had gotten special papal approval to marry her because it was not theologically acceptable to marry your brother's wife, even if your brother was dead. Henry did not want to give up Catherine's dowary and the political ties she brought to England. The Pope refused to give Henry an annulment because Catherine and Henry did not have a male child and the Pope was not going to "undo" the special dispensation Henry was given to marry Catherine to start with.

Another story that I like is that the Church of England was popular in the USA …. until the revolution. And since they didn’t like the idea of pledging to the head of the English church (the King/Queen), the Church of England in the US became the Episcopal Church

Basically Henry wanted to press other women which is why we have the Church of England

Another reason why royalty is ridiculous. Keep up the good work.

Don't forget that the reason the pope said no was because he was imprisoned at that time by Charles V (the holy Roman emperor). Charles V was Catherine of Aragon's nephew.

I call it The Bastard Church of King Henry VIII
As a former Anglican, I was also told that C of E really stands for Christmas and Easter because that’s really the only time most of us go to church 😂

Not enough time in the video to go into it but - the closing of the monasteries was one of the most fucked up things Henry VIII did. So Monasteries and stuff like that at this time weren't just Churches that sat around doing nothing, they were sources of income for a lot of ordinary people but importantly they were the only source of education and medical care for the peasant/working classes. What he did was, in modern terms, like a politician selling every school and hospital in the country to wealthy landowners.

And he did it to fund one of many, many, MANY failed, stupid wars in France. Seriously Henry VIII came into a very wealthy inheritance, his dad left the country in massive financial credit and Henry VIII bankrupted the country MULTIPLE TIMES despite doing heinous shit like this.

The irony of it all is that Henrys line ended with the death of Elizabeth. And his giving Church lands to nobles ultimately gave them more power than the monarch centuries later. All that for nothing.

I cannot describe how much I love your channel. All the history!

I know it’s probably very dramatised but the TV series, The Tudors, does a great job summarising this. They do it over multiple episodes but you’ve managed in a minute, wow!

Wow
That's a fantastic way to spend a minute of my time.

Damn! Thank you so much. I'd never made the timeline link between Martin Luther and Henry VIII. Fills in a few gaps for me.
