Eric Putkonen talks about the phrase sometimes heard in nonduality and Advaita, "there is no person." There is sometimes said as "you are not a person." But what does it actually mean? It really comes down to distinguishing that which is (reality) and that which is not (imagined).

This video is one of 200+ videos about nonduality, enlightenment, and living awake and engaged. Eric speaks in a down-to-earth and straightforward style while simplifying concepts of Advaita / nonduality.

There is no person, I totally agree ❤ based on what I’ve experienced in life identifying with person makes us greedy, selfish and bitter. Letting go of idea of person let’s us see things for what they actually are…. It’s not an easy concept to grasp right away but once you get the hang of it magic happens in your life ❤ thank you for your insight

There is a great line from the film American Psycho which explains this perfectly "…there is an idea of a Patrick Bateman, some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me, only an entity, something illusory, and though I can hide my cold gaze and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable: I simply am not there "

As a Japanese PERSON, born and raised in Japan, this probably is the first time that I have ever heard SOMEONE say “thank you much”

Thought through such things recently. Been always struggling with treating me as a role by others. They kind of assume you have to be this or do that and become angry when you are not following their expectations.

Maybe algorithms are getting smarter but this video reminded me of a movie a watched recently (My Dinner With Andre, 1981) where this idea is very well explained and perhaps easier to understand (because it has a context). I recommend this movie (you can find it here on Utube) to all interested on this subject. The movie offers lost of ideas to reflect upon, including this one.

I would say....there is a person but it's not different from all that is....the difference is simply in the mind.

Impermanence alone negates personhood. The non-dual reality negates the sense of separateness in the witness.

Hey! I've been in this place (however paradoxical that sounds) for a while. It's clear and obvious there is no person - however I don't see how it goes from this, to seeing oneness. I was reading a jeff foster book and he speaks mostly on the fact that there is nothing, that everything is made from beingness etc.

From 'my' perspective, I can sense into the fact that there is spaciousness, pristene awareness... but all I can say about anything else is 'I don't know'. I don't know what the items in my living room are really, it just appears and that's the extent to which I can say.

What do you think? Thanks :)

What does it mean when a certain person or individual keeps on repeating on the mind? Is there some telepathic connection? Or is my thoughts just wandering around? Should I just ignore it? It feels like I sense what people are trying to say about ’me’. Is there any way to solve this issue? Pls help thanks

When they say you must be able to discriminate between what is temporary and what is not temporary, would the only not temporary thing they're referring to be Brahman?

I can see that I am not the body. I can see that I am not the mind. I can see that I am from God. I can see that I am not God (the creator). I can see that others are from God.
I can see that I am not you, and that you are not me, in consciousness. Together this seems to imply some type of 'person'. For me it seems a spiritual concept. I am from God. I am with God. I am not God. I am created in his image (spirit), but I am not him.
Thoughts?

Yes, you're not the sum total of your past experiences, even less what you or anyone else thinks of them or what they make you. Really the idea of a person is just a thought, and you are not a person in the sense that you are not your thoughts. Going even further, we cannot afford to believe, much less act on, everything we think.

The saying= There is no person and you can not find it it is only a mental concept vs.there is only non-duality/ consciousness is also NOT to find or see, so even I agree in "the concept"/the seeing ( I have had my glimps) the arguments are not solid in my interpretation

What do You say?

5:23- "we arent those" (memories).
the person is made up. agreed.

what do you believe the "we" to be?

5:28- memories are the person. the person can only be experienced through memory. that is the trap.
there is no way to experience anything outside of memory, person or not.
outside of the illusion (person) is speculation.
can't be known.
