I don't know why we can't simply have a "packaged on" date instead of an expiration date. Then people could make their own informed decisions.

I try to get meats at "manager deal" prices. They are heavily discounted with an expiration date about 4 to 7 days away. It's easy to freeze a lot of it and over time, you can develop a keen sense of smell to detect if a meat (or dairy) product is starting to go bad. Even if it's past the due date, it's still fine if you prepare it right.

What does the word "expired" mean. Are they referring to business' definition of expired, or actually expired. Reason why I am asking is because most of the time I am fine when I eat food past the best by, sell by, use by exc... However I have gotten sick several times from eating older food. I think its a bit extreme to say ignore food expiration date always. Some food does expire people, its just almost always marketed with the wrong date.

People are blaming corporate greed but it's also down to stupid government and law. If I had a dodgy curry which gave me a dodgy stomach for a day, I'm very likely to write it off as being part of life, recover and get on with it. However, there are those that will, successfully, sue for huge sums of money. It's just not worth the risk for these companies so they'll just out expiry dates on things that don't even go off!

I keep my fridge turned up to max mainly bc I like super cold juice and water but I notice things stay usuable a lot longer even past the sell/use/best if used by date(s).

In Brazil there is an absurd idea that, if the consumer finds a product that has expired in the supermarket, he has the right to take the same quantity found without paying anything. An absolutely stupid law that encourages waste of food because, to avoid this situation, the brands take off the shelves two days before the expiration.

Stores used to give their near expired food to food banks, now they sell it to Grocery Outlet. GO gouges the food poor for profit. Disgusting, and I mean DISGUSTING business practices. Where are you WP?

I volunteered at a safe house for battered women many many years ago. We solely got expired yogurts donated to us. I gave those expired yogurts to children, including babies. NO issues. I ate them too. I’m sure this does not apply to all but yogurt, yes.
