The Convicts of the First Fleet were of all ages, when they were sent as punishment to Australia. Here are the tales of two women who survived the journey and their stories are legendary.

Dorothy Handland, the oldest convict at over 80 years when she arrived in Port Jackson and Elizabeth Hayward who was the youngest female transported at 13 when she departed England.

Each convict had their own journey, many we will never know about,
Haunted and Historic Australia would like to share these known stories with you, so even though their lives have ended, their past lives on.

This is so interesting finding where our descendants came from so long ago and what they endured to survive in early Australia. My family tree we came as free settlers in 1831 on my fathers side. On my mothers side as far as I know was a young lass and she was deported out to Australia for stealing and was 17 yrs old never married but had a few men and lots of children. Dont know many details as Mum had all the records of history but she passed away 2003 and my sister has all of this history.

I’m glad Elizabeth managed to find some happiness, despite being separated from her brother.

G'day, My family arrived in Australia back in1823 from County Cork in Ireland as free settlers, eventually ending up living in the Stroud area then
finally settling in Newcastle NSW.

They were probably abused horribly around all those men. So sad

I am a direct descendant of Elizabeth, she was my fourth great grandmother. Is that a real photo of her as a child, and as an older woman. Also is that a photo of her son George Collins ( my 3rd great grandfather) as a baby. I haven’t been able to find any. Thanks. I already knew the story but really enjoyed your video.

Discovered 3 convicts in our tree, a husband & wife (in-laws), and a tricky fellow whom my 3x gr-grandmother left her husband of 20 yrs to be with. Found many records for them, however proving their whereabouts before conviction has been the most difficult of all.

My mother (Dorothy Williams)relative was sent to Australia as a 16 year old girl. My aunt Patricia had the paper work on the young girl. She passed before I could get a copy of the paperwork. Sad it’s lost to history

Wait a bit. There was no such thing as photography in the late 18th C. Only in the 1850's did photography become commonplace
