Bad Bakers used to get punished because most people were too poor to have their own oven so they got their bread from a Baker. Ingredients were expensive so there were bakers who would put bad ingredients into the mix. Like chalk. (There was actually an incident in England where a bunch of people died because of deathly substances in their bread) Bakers with "bad bread" were punished with public humiliation and later, if it happened again with the removal of their baking license
