Child left outside of Jenison daycare alone, 'guardian angel' brings him inside

A Jenison mom is sharing her story after her toddler son was left alone outside at daycare. She says it could have been much worse if another mom hadn't stepped in.

I'm a former daycare worker. There should've been an adult in front of the line & another at the rear, no matter the age of the children. Complacent employees.

My son was left alone in his kindergarten classroom, locked in so he couldn’t get out for 40 minutes while his class was at the school library. If there was a fire he wouldn’t have been able to get out. This was at a pricey private school too. Couldn’t believe that the teacher had no idea my 5 year old was missing for that long. Opened my eyes that an expensive tuition doesn’t guarantee anything.

God Bless the lady that found the little boy and took him inside and posted what happened. She's a true hero. It could have gone so bad for him.

Who does a headcount at a different location? Aren’t you supposed to do it before you leave, when you’re lined up to go. Then do it again as you’re entering the bus or school doorway.

I was fortunate to stay home with my children even though we had to pinch pennies sometimes until they were school age. It's hard but worth it. Then I retired to take care of my grand babies. They're just too precious to trust someone else.

That's why I stopped working and now I take care of my grandchildren. I am aware of a lot of incidents that happen in some of the daycare my grandchildren went to and that was enough for my daughter's to get them out and for me to retire early.

What's upsetting is the way that they responded when the woman showed them the child that was left behind so nonchalant of an attitude as the woman who found the toddler expressed it.

I feel bad for mother’s who work and leave their infants or toddlers at a daycare. The children cannot tell parents if something off happens. My husband and I lived on his income because we determined our kids were not going to be in that position ever. We gave up a lot of material things and lived from paycheck to paycheck. It was worth it. I do not regret it. Later both he and I worked, and today have a comfortable retirement.
Oh, and we trusted God to provide. We believe in tithing and followed that principle. He provided and we never were without food, clothing or housing.

Cautionary tale - be sure to research any daycare facility you are considering, check if their license is current, fencing is secure, adequate staff for number of children, etc. You can never be too careful.

That’s the reason why all parents need to put a petition and go to the Supreme Court for cameras live audio and video on daycare and schools

I was left outside as a child. I was playing by the street. I remember my mom’s grandpa picking me up and putting me down right outside the door. When I went in everyone was shocked that I was outside. I turned around and said come on Pawpaw. He was gone. Years later when I told my family about that moment, they remember me being outside by myself because it was December (cold and rainy) also it was his funeral.
