Just a heads up! This video is my opinion based on what info I could find. Don't take it as canon. See what I did there? ;-) But in all seriousness, I don't have a GH5s nor have I opened up the GH5s to see what is or is not in there.

This was one of the most lucid and informed explanations of the differences (and target audiences) for these two cameras that I've seen so far. Bravo Caleb, excellent work.

Great sensor breakdown. One thing you didn’t mention was the huge improvement in lowlight. The GH5s destroys the GH5 when it come to high iso performance. A huge benefit

You are very right. The GH5s is not an upgrade, it is a different camera built for different priorities. Many, in fact, most people will be better served by the GH5. I'm impressed that Panasonic developed this camera for this unique set of needs.

You're a bloody good teacher, Caleb! This makes so much sense now

This was really eye opening! If you are looking to shoot drama, with lots of dramatic lighting, the GH5S makes sense. If you shoot handheld in broad daylight, it isnt.

You didn't show it, but the standard 4:3 capture frame is bigger on the gh5s.

Your videos have really stepped up the game. Great job, I'm picking up a GH5S.

Honestly, as a documentary filmmaker I’d rather have no IBIS and better slow mo/larger image/low light capability.

Sure, IBIS is great. Although, even as a run n gun doc filmmaker I wouldn’t handhold the camera unless it was a spur of the moment “I need this shot now” incident. I would at the very least have a small handheld gimble or a shoulder mount with an IS lens mounted which would make up for no lens/camera dual stabilization. Even if I was in a “NOW” situation The IS on lens would make up for most of the shakiness.

I find better low light capability more beneficial as a doc filmmaker than IBIS because I can easily stabilize with small portable tools whereas there is no easily portable tool to fix poor low light situations.

I'm visiting this again because I've sold my A7sii and I'm going back and forth between GH5 & GH5s. Wow, some of these comments are very personal. Great job as always, my guy!

Finally, GH5s coverage! Very well explained, Caleb. Thank you for your effort. Can't wait for another piece of GH5s content.

what about comparing this to the GH6 now in 2023? am I better off to go up several 100 dollars now to get the GH6 or to find a second hand gh5S for a couple of hundred dollar less?
what do you you suggest for a film maker?
I already got three lenses from my GH3...
so am thinking to either get this one, the GH6 or the Black magic p4k..
what do you suggest?
thanks for getting back !

Great explanation. That more sensor coverage that you get with the GH5s is definitely worth it for serious videographers.
