Bastion does have a skin that has the moss, flowers and even the nest on the shoulder

at 5:03 you can see a castle in the background which is the Eichenwalde castle from the Hybrid map "Eichenwalde"

the name of the bird is Ganymede

as for the link with aurora and the genesis short :

i think bastion got deactivated in the war one way or another, then aurora happened and he was given the freedom of choice. But since he was not active he did not hear the message and was not aware that he was not obligated to follow the previous order. and you saw what happened : robot PTSD, regret, rage and then Ganymede came to him and he made a choice.

Bastion is an absolutely wonderful short, I'm so glad you enjoyed it- it never fails to make me tear up

this video and the last genesis video always make me shed a tear, like Bastions PTSD and his emotional support bird, and Auroras sacrifice. They are beautifully shown

Bastion is sentient here. They had already delved into the fact that the Omnics were sentient after the war back when this came out, but we didn't know how until the Genesis series came out

It is connected with genesis, when the war begun he got blocked in the forest not reaching the battlefield and shutted down, so in the while before Ganimede (the bird) awaken him, he also got the “coscience” from Aurora, he is the only Bastion sentinel who have a conscience

i love how in the beginning, he was on a way to a mission somewhere, but then he got distracted by this beautiful nature and is just enjoying exploring it

on the comics they send torbojon and he finds out that this bastion is sppecial :) and he "adopts" him? :P
