I, as a studen don’t care about how fast cpu is, A15 is more than enough for students. I just want 128gb option and maybe 120hz display but at 599$.
For creators there is a ipad pro with fast cpu, ipad Air should be for Students. I think m1 cpu was unnecessary for ipad air. 120hz display and 128gb storage option are more important to 90% of people.
What do you think?

The biggest problem with the air is the starting storage of 64gb. Once I heard that it was coming with the M1, I thought the base would be 128gb.

agree. The storage kills it. Apple's storage strategy is just too evil.

Fantastic APART from the poor storage options.

I bought an Air 4 recently and think I’ll keep it over getting the Air 5. $499 plus tax for the same 64GB design with a still capable A14 chip is good enough for me. M1 is probably not even fully optimized for iPadOS and the only app that I’ll probably take advantage of that chip is just Procreate. I’m a hobbyist and I think spending even $600 on a tablet is overkill unless you use it for professional work or content creation. My main reason to get the Air 5 is just for the purple color variant with the M1 chip being a close second. Otherwise, it’s the same product with upgraded internals; basically it’s an iPad Air 4S in my eyes. If Apple only increased the base storage to 128GB instead of going with their usual marketing ploy to “encourage” people to go higher then this would be a better purchase overall.

Bought an iPad pro 11 2 weeks ago. And i don’t regret it. Those speakers are way better and 120hz is such a gigantic difference against 60hz.

The 11" iPad Pro, with a brighter screen, 120 Hz refresh rate, Face ID and stereo sound regardless of the device’s orientation, seems worth its slightly higher price. I understand why all of these features aren’t available on the iPad Air; then there would be little to differentiate the two tablets.
I’m not sure how valuable Center Stage is. For a user who video conferences frequently, it might be a game-changer, but for others it seems like a gimmick.
Some of the “Pro” features available in the 2020 iPad Pro (which is available refurbished) appeal to me more than the M1 chip. I’m upgrading from a 10.5" Pro so I could get a bump in performance without the newest chip.

Which the exception of the 5G connectivity, I don’t feel compelled to leave the 2018 iPad Pro 11in. The new iPad Air is a nice tablet and looked at it for a possible replacement/upgrade from the 2018 iPad Pro, just didn’t quite cut it for me.

Personally I'm really disappointed by the new Air. It continues to feel less like a Pro killer or a budget option and more like the product that exists to make it easier to upsell you on a Pro. 64GB is not enough storage and the 256GB version is so close to the price of the Pro that you might just as well go with that one. The nicer display will noticeably impact your user experience, so will FaceID. Having M1 does nothing for most people. It's nice you can get a more powerful iPad for less now, but what can you do with that power? The CPU hasn't been the limiting factor for ages now. For most people the storage space will have a larger impact, same for the screen. And ultimately the actual bottleneck remains the OS. If Apple wanted to make a truly great budget option they'd keep a worse processor in the Air and instead have it start at 128GB, maybe give it more RAM (there's no way that they'd give it a nicer screen because while high refresh rates are becoming standard on Android devices, Apple is clearly dead set on making them into a premium feature for a few more generations). But they know at that point it would actually start undercutting their Pro sales so we're getting upgrades that sound impressive but don't really do much and don't address the actual drawbacks of the Air model.

I feel like it really didn't kill the iPad Pro, 64Gb of Storage, No ProMotion, etc. If you want anything more than 64Gb of storage then you're already at the price of an 11 inch iPad Pro 128Gb

Reasons to buy the iPad Pro right now: ProMOTION XDR display on the 12.9, better speakers, FaceID, larger display. Otherwise, there's actually no reason to buy an iPad Pro now. The software doesn't even utilize the power of the A13 in the base iPad Pro, never mind the M1. And I own the 2021 12.9 iPad Pro, but the M1 in it is utterly overkill.

Apple missed the mark in my opinion. Instead of upgrading the processor to the M1, they should have done 128GB storage and the A15 processor. Nobody with an iPad Air 4 wishes they had more power. What they want is ProMOTION and at least 128GB of storage as an option.

The two products I want but don't expect to see are anytime in the near or far future are:
1: iMac 27" Retina with a M2 instead of the intel.
2: iPad Pro 15/16", M2, camera in landscape orientation, 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports.

what putting in a M1 really does, is increase Apples profit margins. By sticking an M1 in everything, they make they number of different processors they need to make less. This means they can focus on just one main chip and due to economies of scale, the cost per chip goes down.

I just ordered the 11” pro and honestly, no pro motion killed this on arrival. I’ve still got a 10.5 first gen pro and it’s performance still holds up for web, video, music etc consumption.

120hz is a game changer once you experience it so for me, that’s the only option and main reason to pass on this. Getting Face ID, better speakers and a better camera are just added bonuses and we still don’t know if apple will update the thunderbolt port on the pros to do more (extend to external display?) so that’s also something to consider.

Also, we buy iPads like once every 5+ years. Spend a few extra bucks for the pro.

I have the Air 4. When I heard the Air was getting the M1 chip. I was excited to see what the air 5 had in store. It looked like it can be a cheaper IPad Pro but the storage options killed it. I’m in love with the Air 4 and don’t need center stage. I can still take notes make videos draw and play Apple Arcade. Plus my iPad came with 4 free months of extra storage more then 64g. My iPad is the perfect tool for a kid in school getting some work done. Thanks mom!

Honestly without something like DeX, it's just a newer version of the same tablets they already sell. There needs to be an optimized software experience or it's just a waste of the admittedly great hardware.

Is it having any creaking issue on back of ipad?

The big difference between the Air and the Pro for me is the speakers. 4 in the Pro vs 2 in the Air. I know it’s nit picky but I use the speakers all the time and need as much volume as I can get. Hoping my Pro lasts a few more year.

64gb isn’t enough, and is the reason I bought the Pro instead of the Air last year. I’d still buy a Pro for that reason. But the M1 chip just made it a very interesting proposition!
I have a suspicion the next event will be Pro themed. IPad Pro, Mac Pro, iMac Pro. Should be interesting!
