I recommend the 20w or 40w for maximum plywood cutting. The 10w can do engraving well, but not thick cutting.

Great review. Looking at getting one and most other reviews feel like paid adverts! Good to see someone who gives some realistic reviews.

Does damping or soaking the wood first affect charging ? Thanks for making the fire hazards a point. Our 1st work shop burt and we jus got one of these for the new one. im soo weary of fire now, im nervous to take it out the box.. after seeing the depth & detail my mind is already making things.

sensational review. Thanks for bringing actual capabilities of the D1PRO as opposed to specs. Would you consider doing a review on what other materials it can engrave, steel/stainless/acrylic. regards Darren

Air assist is really of value during cutting operations as it keeps the kerf clean. The key for clean engravings is a mixture of very, very, light air assist (just enough to keep your lens clean), and lots of exhaust air. When you engrave you want the soot to rise and then be carried away by your exhaust air as quick as possible before it settles back down on your work. With these open frame lasers this is difficult to accomplish. An enclosure with an exhaust fan will help keep your engravings cleaner.

How many passes should it take for a D1 Pro 20W to go through 1/4" basswood? In lightburn, I try 12 passes at 15mm/sec and 100% power and I still end up with adhesions. The first layer goes through fine, but either it seems to run out of laser waist focus, or it just doesn't seem to punch through all the way. I'm not quite sure how the stock software seems to deliver more power, but xtool creative space is horribly inefficient when it comes to engraving and I can't stand using it for anything except very basic shapes and cuts.

Is there any sort of reference chart for the most efficient speed and power to use for different types and thicknesses of wood?

I returned recently my xtool 20w pro. It didn’t cut colour acrylic and tried so many times to get the engraving to work also. The smell of acrylic burning is so toxic it gave me a headache. I had to sometimes run a 5 pass to get it to cut the 3mm acrylic and you could really see and smell the burnt melted acrylic. Might be an ok machine but definitely not for cutting and engraving acrylic.

Purchased the D1 Pro 20W. It was delivered 4 days ago. The diode unit focus point thumb screw is stripped. I've been calling, emailing, bot chatting, and even sending emails to executives via LinkedIn for the last 2 days. The only response I've received is from someone telling me they will make sure everything is okay. Well, everything is definitely not okay. The manufacturing quality of the unit is unimpressive. I can think of better ways to spend $1, 500.

They are an infrared diode and cds cell sensor. The tab blocks the beam, similar to the perforated wheel on an old school mouse.

I think they added the color & sent those out to everyone to make sure people knew this was a new item without confusion that it is just another push of D1 original marketing. Very smart of them if so.

How does this compare to the Glowforge not taking into consideration the enclosure and the exhaust adapter? I have the Glowforge Pro but would like a backup just in case.

Did you use the air assist and also do you recommend putting an exhaust on

Mad I bought the D1 and then shortly after the D1 Pro came out I wonder if they'll have an upgrade program

I m new to laser machine and in market to use for making pop up cards from cardstock paper and some miniature wood pieces. I have Cricut maker machine.
1) does it work on cardstock paper making intricate cuts or too strong for it?
2) other tool air assist or honeycomb is optional in such application? like to try first and gradually like to add accessory.
3) what is longevity of this machine? I read mixed review on amazon
4)Looking at xtool d1 pro 10w or 20w . I see diff of 500 $ between them. Should I go with 20w ? Does 10W cut more intricate cuts then 20w?
Quick reply (if u can) will be great

I like those limit switches, and I wish they did the same thing with the xcarve. I’ve broken a couple things because of that not having any limit switches.

Just curious. Would a 5 or 10 watt even be worth it, because you can just tune down the output wattage of the laser? -50% power =10w for example
