I used to think most diode lasers were just glorified toys especially compared to my big expensive co2 lasers, but the XTool D1 changed my mind with their new diode technology giving more power then I thought possible. co2 Lasers better watch out cause this thing packs a powerful punch.

Chad's Air Assist Kit

Hi Chad, air-assist, while very important for keeping the beam from diffusing, won't help with cutting acrylic. 405nm diode lasers use visible light that passes almost unimpeded through clear acrylic - since nothing is absorbed, no heat is generated and acrylic is largely unaffected. CO2 lasers use long wavelength IR to which Acrylic is totally opaque. If you ever get the chance to play with a thermal imaging camera, try looking through glass or Plexiglass -both appear jet black. You can surface engrave clear acrylic if you paint it black or stick on some builder's tape - the coating burns, transferring some of the heat to the acrylic and melting it. I've read that more powerful diode lasers can cut through darkly coloured acrylic, though I've never tried that - the CO2 laser is the correct tool for cutting acrylic and does it well. Btw, nice relaxing & informative video, thanks for that :-)

Run and owned Co2 lasers for over 20 years. These diode lasers have really come a long way. Nice to see. Aso I've heard that it's only the clear acrylic. Try black or another opaque material

I knocked back a shot every time you said, “The machine”. I don’t even remember the end of the video, but you did a great job on what I do recall!

Thanks! Just order D1 Pro with extension and enclosure looking forward

Thanks for such a ‘to the point’ review and for showing the results on so many materials. I’ve got the M1 on order with the same laser so this is helpful!

I just purchased this machine from another person's recomendation, and your video helped me know that I made the right decision. Thank you.

While customer support is not real-time, their email response is fast, helpful and they follow up to see if you have any additional problems.

Thank you for an amazing review. I was looking for a reliable machine that can perform and handle basic tasks well. Your review helped me make the decision.

In the 90's I worked on and built the first co2 prototype laser sys. With acoustic oscillators and some code, we would scribe the mona lisa on denim jackets as a demo. I was 23 when I built my first 25w liquid cooled co2 laser @10.6um. Its amazing 3d prototyping and laser cutting/etching in the home only took 25 years.

FINALLY! Thank you very much for such a thorough review! I watched dozens of videos and no one seemed to fully test all claimed capabilities, particularly for box making. Thanks again!

Just randomly come across your channel and binged a bunch of these videos.

Could you make a video/tutorial for laser cutting/making the designs/importing designs?

Looks like a great little craft hobby but I wouldnt know where to start!

Thank you for this!! I've been wanting these since I saw it and it's so nice to see a full review!!

I am impressed it can do that without an air assist. Usually the carbonization of the wood makes it even harder to cut and at that thickness the focus would go off humm.

Thank you.

Great video! I was interested in a laser from Craigslist, but the deal fell through. Then I saw this model and thought it might be a better model. I’m glad waited, and this video helped me decide this is the model that I want.

Thanks for posting this, and hope to order this in the near future.

hello, on diode lasers clear acrylic does not absorb the 405nm wavelength vey much. so use colored blackacrylic or black delrin materials for example. co2 lasers are deep into IR range about 10000nm and most of energy is absorbed as acrylic absorbs most of this frequency.
