A key to this behavior is the fact she was homeless and worked 3 jobs to make ends meet as a young teen. What we got here is what's known as PTSD. She had it so bad growing up, now her brain can't balance her new reality and is instead getting ready for a possible fall back to homelessness. So to give herself some control she does everything she can to keep that from happening. What's interesting is that most of our grandparents also went through it, anyone who lived through the great depression and saw people starve to death, came out of it changed. If you ever saw your grandparents save every penny, not waste any food, stich up old clothes to keep using them etc...All of that came from fear of wasting resources that could save their lives should another worldwide economic downturn happen. I grew up very poor and I have a little bit of it I guess...I fix things when they break, I'm a super DIYer, I save where I can...I won't eat cat food or anything to that extend, but I understand why she does this.
