I did NOT see that ending coming! Good play!

The rasp on my personal wish list is the "Shinto" or saw rasp. I got to use one once, and have been saving me pennies to pick one up.
Also, for tough grain or hard woods, try a car body file. It works beautifully for shaping and removing file marks, depending on how much pressure you apply. Plus you can easily dress the edges without dipping it in acid.

My four in hand is my go to file. Use it on almost every project, especially when making spoons.

Appreciate how you have each separated from all other ones. Drives me nuts when I see guys just toss them in a drawer, banging teeth against teeth! Then, to find the one they're looking for, they bang through them rubbing them all together.
So, again, good to see a craftsman caring for the tools that are caring for him.

When I was a scout wood working was my favorite hobby. That and leather working. These tools are very valuable to me

I work in a school near Sheffield, England, as a physics tech. I makw a lot of equipment for the lessons where i can. Over the years i havw made sure to save and restore old hand tools as they get thrown out or not needed.
I recently got an arm full of Sheffield steel mid 60s files, screwdrivers amd chisels.
Something satisfying about mounting a new handle and oiling it 🥰

One of my favorite files is a Grobet Vulcanite file. It is a sort of double half-round file intended for plastics, but it works well for wood, and can make some very elaborate complex curves quite easily - it is my favorite fine file for making the volute and heel on guitars.

The local garage sales are an excellent source for inexpensive tools of this ilk, my dads generation were a band of brothers in many respects, hand tools were the norm, we are their beneficiaries in that and many other ways

Got to the end and you made me laugh and think, “what a dork!” LoL

4 in hand! I found one at a flea market for a few bucks. Really quite cheap because someone used it on plastic, tar and something else that gunked up the teeth. Some solvent, a bit of time with my file card and POW! Brand new tool. I love it! Works like a champ!

I have over 1000 files in my shop. Anytime I go to an estate sale I buy them. The good ones I keep to use, the bad ones get turned into kitchen knives and other knives (I’m more of a black smith than a carpenter but I dabble in wood working so)

Thanks... Had not such a good handle on rasps.

I think the most valuable knowledge is that files have to be sharp. there is absolutely no use in old rusty files - a file is an expandable tool and once dull (in most cases) shall be exchanged

I have a broad collection, too. There's Isabelle, Sonia, Nia, Paulina, Camellia, Lily...

Interesting file storage! What about those people that think files just thrown in a drawer "sharpens" them?

I would absolutely love it if you posted a list of what you feel is a well rounded set of files by type and finess. I have no idea how to chose files for woodworking. Rasps are pretty well covered.

Ya know, I do the same thing with my metal work. Makes it less brazing.
