PSA: Mnemonic explanation:
"File" comes from a word that means "line", hence "files have lines".
He says "riffler", but it's spelled, (and probably pronounced, ) "rifler", as in "rifle" - both "to cut a spiral groove" and "gun with spiral grooves in the barrel".
One rifling method I looked up involved using a tool to cut grooves in a chamfered cylinder. It corkscrews when shoved down the barrel, producing the rifling.

Some of us beyond a certain age had a colloquial advantage. There were simply more folks using hand tools some years ago. Even now, I find it odd to ask someone for a particular file only to have them wonder if I've made up a name on the spot.
BTW, it's heartening to see you've so many tools. I feel better about myself when I see you roll out TWO canvas sleeves!😅

My electrical instructor in HS (yes, a commercial electric class was available in my HS) made us learn and memorize all of the different types of files/rasps in year 1 while we were in the hand tools section of the NCCER NEC textbook. At least, all of the types actually shown in the book... That was fun lol.

Yeah had a guy in shop class in high school try to use a metal file on wood. Teacher let him file a project for 3 days before telling him he was using the wrong kind of file.

If i was a blacksmith, id be making custom rasps an trying to make a brand from it, a good rasp is hard to come by unless you got good money

We use rifler style rasps in ortho surgery and it bugs the shit out of me every time a resident calls it a fucking file.
